  • 2012 Zonal and Goddesschess Women’s Closed

Before everything, I would like to thank the other two co-organizers of the tournament, Nicolas Arsenault and Claude Lalumière (who was also the TD) for their great work this week. Unexpected health issues prevented me from directing the tournament, but we were lucky enough to have a great team of volunteers and excellent arbiters : IA Serge Archambault, his wife Marina and Bernard Ouimet.

    Opening Ceremony
A video of the opening ceremony is available online :

This was filmed by Don Maclean, from Goddesschess. Goddesschess made the Women’s Closed possible thanks to his financial contribution. They have great projects for the future and we greatly encourage you to visit their blog, which has interesting articles on both women and chess and chess history :

The financial contribution of SAP, principal sponsor of the Zonal, was also mentioned. SAP has been a great supporter for chess tournaments in the past years.

Finally, the organizers thanked MonRoi for broadcasting the games live throughout the tournament.

    IGA Sponsorship
A great buffet, which included sandwiches, salads, seafood and desserts was offered, free of charge, for the players between the two Sunday rounds. This sponsorship from IGA allowed the players to take a break, discuss and watch the Olympic games in the heart of our own Olympic Stadium!

I will let Claude Lalumière give the final results later tonight and announce the winners. He will be able to tell you more about the winners, the titles and the ending of the tournament.

In the Women's it looks like one of Lali Agbabishvilli and Myriam Roy will get the WIM title, the other will get the WFM title as will Qiyu Zhou - they all exceeded the requirements by 1 point, which means they can extend their 8 rounds to 9 as per FIDE Handbook B.1.41c. Under the same rule Chang Yun may or may not get the WCM title, it's a little less obvious.

The men's results seem to have stopped updating at some point, all that is clear at this point is that the IM and both FM titles WILL be awarded, but not 100% clear as to who won them!
