    Re: Superfest 2012...

I originally had no intention of posting - but then I looked again at the flyers - and yes this tournament was an amazing deal. Speaking for myself the entry would have been $60 - and great hotel rates. It reminded me in some ways of North Bay - and I have missed North Bay ever since it stopped happening in 1999. Of course North Bay was a full international with many sections but it was in August with a trip to northern Ontario and was a real blast for participants. This venue is even nicer. How did North Bay attract such numbers? I believe that you need ambassadors for an event like this - and North Bay certainly had them - there were carloads of people going from the Toronto area as well as southwestern Ontario. I looked at the participant list of this event (the Superfest) and there were very few from Ontario - mainly Ottawa area (I think) - so if you want to build it you should at least send personal invites by email and perhaps find some ambassadors - let others help create the "buzz" about a great event. I really think we could use a replacement for North Bay (if you will) in this part of the country and I for one because of my summer situation here in Kitchener am hard put to attend any summer events but if it is held next year it is one event I would attend. Looking at my work calendar - it would only mean two working days off and would be a real mini vacation.

Larry, there are many beautiful locations within about a 30-45 minute drive from Montreal - maybe you could consider something a little closer to the big city in the future. It might make for a better turnout as well.
If I may suggest, part of the allure of such an event is NOT having it too close to any major city. That way, people get in the frame of mind of committing to a mini-vacation.

It's great you enjoyed the location, but I think players and families who stayed there, booked rooms (which Larry needs to happen fiscally), enjoyed the location much more.

Just my 2c worth, that one of the reasons this was special was BECAUSE it was not local!

I think the main arguments are that the draw was agreed before the match was played, not that it was agreed in such short amount of moves. The moves played have never been played by either player and Roman had motivation enough to play for a win (a share of joint 1st place).

In Bator's defence, he called Jean Hebert a racist and an idiot so it looks like a pretty even argument thus far.
The FIDE rules of chess are:

"c. The game is drawn upon agreement between the two players during the game. This immediately ends the game. (See Article 9.1)"

Looking after business is nothing new and often result in short draws.

There have even been draws discussed here in which no moves were played.

As for the final round game between Bator and Roman, I am not familiar with the exact details, but does it really matter? These men put themselves in a position where a final round draw was satisfactory for both. They earned the right to play for a draw in the final round if that is what they wanted. It also doesn't matter if they discussed it beforehand or not. This is only optics. Players generally know before they sit down at the board that a draw is an acceptable outcome, whether they verbalize it or not. Let those who complain, get to a position where they can settle for a draw in the final round and be content...

Good analogy Hugh! I believe that this event has tremendous potential. The location is so darn relaxing, and the playing room was awesome. It featured high ceiling, a massive wall of huge windows providing natural light, and a raised area for the parents (and even other spectators) to sit and watch their children, and almost any game in the room! :)

I know Larry lost money on the event, as he had guaranteed the prize fund. However, many of us were urging him to try and build this up for next year. If I may suggest, if you did attend this year, and loved it, let other people know what they missed! ;)

Larry, Alexandre, et al, thank you for one of the best chess long weekends ever! :)

P.S. to Hugh : I believe every single game was captured on carbon. I know U2000 was.

added later : Another great feature of this hotel was the huge patios overlooking the lake! You could at any time escape to what felt like your own porch, with food/drink service! :)

I had a great time Larry. The site was truly magnificent and it was an excellent idea to mix holidays with chess like that. Except for a few quibbles (no easy access to coffee during rounds and a playing hall where the lighting was a bit too low), it was an enjoyable experience and I certainly hope you'll be able to repeat it!

We had great weather and it was a relaxing vacation. The lake had lots opf chess kids swimming and having a good time. The hotel is willing to work with us if we decide to try and build the event next year.

I would love to get feedback before taking a decision on next year.

North Bay was a 9-rounder with norm chances though, wasn't it?

    Hi Aris,

I will know better at the end of the event.

I received an e-mail from newly crowned Canadian champion Bator Sambuev yesterday.

There is a reasonable chance that we will be able to add him to the list of participants for this year.
