General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Toronto Labour Day Open - Results, Pairings & Standings
lol omg so thats why she seemed like she was practising piano when she was playing me. She started moving her fingers when she was nervous. Hmmm...i wonder if she is better at chess or piano? O_o
Suffice it to say that she's damn good at both, Robert. I think the thing that impressed me the most about her chess was the fact that she beat the two guys - you and Frank Wang - that I had pegged as the prohibitive favourites in your section and beat your both with precise endgame play, something you would never expect of a 6 year-old. Frank,of course, had walked his two previous U1600 tournaments with identical 5.5/6 scores. And I know that Zehn felt that you were even stronger than your 1580 rating. I'm just glad there wasn't a betting line at Hart House or I could have lost some serious money.
You probably won't appreciate this quite yet, if ever, but you did provide some serious schadenfruede (a great German word for "pleasuere in another's misfortune") to Frank Wang. He came over to your table a couple of times and each time left with a wry smile upon seeing that Harmony was making you suffer in the same manner that she did him. I have a strong feeling that Harmony is going to make a great number of strong chess players suffer in the years to come.

Even money says Harmony can take on and beat
the whole Peel Chess Club in a simul....blindfold?
Hans down!:-)

Care to wager, JB?
I don't know, Francis. Are there any good gambit players at the Peel Chess Club? A good gambiteer might just be able to trick Harmony with an offbeat line. Particularly if she's playing blindfold (:

Jack, the Peel Chess Club (aka JB:-) did just that in Round 2 of
said Labour Day Open, snucking a sneak mate past a hapless
Colin Archibald! Said Archibald not amused, was suitably trenchant,
awaiting vengeance at Thanksgiving. A contradiction in terms?!
Re: Toronto Labour Day Open - Results, Pairings & Standings
Hi Jack
By winning Robert would have shared $600 with 5 0r 6 others and $200 with his team mates. That seems more than $50.
Yes he would have got $50 from the team prize had he drawn.
Harmony, with a draw would have also shared in the pooled 2nd and third prizes.
With Harmony's win Robert got nothing.
For me, this Labour Day was the Best run tournament I have been to in a while.
Most of it ran smoothly and I only had to see the TD once about a problem at my board.
I had some enjoyable games and got lucky in two others. I was lucky to even be part of the prize winners.

Ode to Heroes by G.K.
"Heroes come in many shapes and forms – a firefighter, a veteran, or an aid worker helping starving people in a far off country. But according to Google’s definition of a hero, Hart House has some of it’s own.
Those folk like Geordie Derraugh, Alex Ferreira, and others who tirelessly manage and co-ordinate these tournaments should not be forgotten by any of us when we play. Without them we couldn’t have such great experiences of a game we love. This tournament was my second at Hart House and it was every bit as good as the first."
Re: Toronto Labour Day Open - Results, Pairings & Standings
Hi all,
The tournament has been rated.
Thanks all for coming and hope you had a blast.
Thanks as well to those who helped getting things going, Bryan and Daniel, and to Lali, Kit and Adie packing up at the end. Needlessly to say, Geordie also had things always under control, making the tournament run smoothly.
I am up to round 4 on games posted on chess5, leisurely entering 3 or 4 here and there, will have them done soon.
During the endgame, I think in the beginning I had a winning position (Knight outpost on d6, active rook) but I did not play the position correctly and Harmony did allowing her to equalize the position. She played a great endgame and game and she is truly a great chess player, wonder what her playing strength will be when she's older. :)
Not that it's likely much consolation, Robert, but Harmony is now a 1472 CFC rated player. She picked up 382 points for her 1726 TPR Hart House performance and another 142 points for her 4.5/5 performance this month at my chess club, the Annex Chess Club.
She's moving up to my U1900 section next month at the ACC so I suspect I too may well soon suffer the ignominy of losing to a six-year-old. Not just any six-year-old, however. She's already the strongest U8 in the entire country, male or female. From the CFC website the top 5 U8 players are:
1 Zhu, Harmony Burnaby, BC 1472 2012-09-24
2 Lin, Benjamin Toronto, ON 1410 2012-09-16
3 Doknjas, Neil Surrey, BC 1245 2012-09-03
4 Washimkar, Arhant North York, ON 1146 2012-09-16
5 Zhao, Ian Calgary, AB 1103 2012-07-31
I'd like to put a plug in for the CFC's Rating Auditor. The large rating increases are due to the recent rating formula changes ( bonus points ) made by him, to deal with the problem of under-rated juniors.
It is working here, and we have been monitoring our juniors at Scarborough CC, and those needing increases are getting them.

You can pass on my personal gratitude, Bob. Losing to a 1472 Harmony Zhu won't be nearly as painful as losing to a 948 Harmony Zhu (:
She's still significantly underrated, imho, given her two TPRs this month (1645 and 1726). Of course, with the new bonus system in effect that you've highlighted, she'll likely reach those levels soon enough.
