An EOCA Grand Prix Event

Date: October 19-20-21, 2012
Place: RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa - Courtside rooms
Rounds: 5, Friday 7:30 PM Saturday & Sunday @ 10 AM & 3 PM.

Type: Regular Swiss

Sections and prizes are based on projected entries and may change.

Over 2200 - (rated FIDE & CFC); 1st $400, 2nd $250 3d $150. Only runs if 8 or more enter.
U2200 – (rated FIDE & CFC); 1st $250, 2nd $175 3rd $100
U 1900 – ( rated CFC); 1st $200, 2nd $125 3rd $75; U1750 $100;
U1600 – (rated CFC) 1st $125, 2nd $75 3rd 50.


Time Control: Game-in-90-plus-30-seconds-a-move, or SD/120 with analog clock

Entry Fee: Over 2200 $80 if pre-registered, $100 at site;
U2200 $60 if pre-registered, $70 at site;
U1900 $60 if pre-registered, $70 at site;
U1600 $40 if pre-registered, $50 at site.
Add $20 if playing up a section. Player must be 100 points or less from the rating floor for the section he wants to play up in.

Amateur $30. Amateurs are not eligible for prizes or Over 2200 section.
Free entry for GM/WGM & IM/WIM.

CFC or FQE membership is required.

Requesting byes: max of two ½ point byes in the first four rounds.

This looks like a pretty competitive top section if it happens - I wish I could play! Unfortunately, I won't be able to as this tournament conflicts with the tail end of the SPICE Cup in St. Louis.

Grant and I got together this afternoon for a few blitz games. I mentioned that you've been getting some very strong results lately, and he said he had seen some of your results lately. He's very impressed with how far you've gone!!

Hi Jordan,

Wow I remember the days when I would go to Grant's place for chess and it would turn into a lemon-eating contest. For some reason all we ever did was see how fast I could eat an entire lemon without flinching. That aside, Grant was the top dog when I was active and playing in NL, and I always remember drawing him at the Newfoundland Open (i think?) and coming 2nd place overall by 0.5 pts.

He was a great mentor and a great player, I hope he's doing well! It's fun to know he still follows my chess. I don't think I was ever good enough at blitz back then to take any games off him, let alone compete at all... kudos for snagging a few :D

Aman,

Grant started coaching me back in the day when we both lived in Montreal, and then continued (albeit sporadically) when we were living in Toronto. Now he's content with playing a few online games here and there, but his coaching and playing days are sadly over.

It's great to see how well you're doing, and many of the guys here in St. John's still think about you. I moved here in 2006, and I think you had already left by then. Maybe someday you'll come back for a visit? :D

And yes, it was the NL Open that you drew him in and finished second...

Just in case anyone is wondering who "Grant" is in this conversation (remember, Jordan, the world is reading your posts, and may not have a clue of to whom you are referring), it is Grant Spraggett. who is currently living in Newfoundland. He is a brother of Kevin, has a rating of 2385, but hasn't played a rated game since 2007.

Good luck Halldor, it's nice to see some variance with the tournament directors. I would love to get some practice in before the Canadian open and the big Gatineau tourney next year, but like always chess is a rich mans sport in Ottawa. If I ever come across several thousand dollars of throw-away money I'll be sure to come check out the tourney scene again. It's really about the gambling isn't it? Think I'll just keep playing on line and keep my money for important things like food and rent.
