The Chess Improver (the blog of GM Nigel Davies) carried an interesting piece yesterday on "Cognitive Fluency".

For some reason this article precipitates an immediate image of CFC governor Bob Armstrong who for years on end played every White game with 1.d4 (followed by 2.c4) and every Black game with 1. ...g6 (which made Bob the easiest chess player in the world to prep for). Of course, Bob has changed his White opening in recent years to 1.g3. This (facetiously) raises the linguistic query, can a chess opening repertoire consist of one opening only or does a repertoire require a minimum of two opening choices?

An interesting question, for sure. Probably the correct reply is that it depends on how high, or low, you want your rating.

The answer to trivia questions are strewn with players who could play a defense and win with regularity but for some reason lost frequently when playing the white side. I'm not going to use names.

There are defenses which should be used as surprise or against opponents who have demonstrated they can't beat it. Particularly at the higher levels. Like the French Winawer.

Probably you should have a working knowledge of 5 or 6 defenses and the same with white, for a club player. While you might not play them all you'll want to be familiar enough to play against them. Playing g3 as white or g6 as black in every game is boring.

Think Duncan Suttles. Not every game, but, so many! And such great games.
