General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Another conversation that I've had trouble getting started.......
some other topics that nobody seems to want to discuss:
- it apparently costs the CFC approx. $2/player to rate an event (as per a previous post by Fred McKim) - an amount that on the face of it seems grossly inefficient.
- that policy of rating all junior events with no membership required at $0.50 per player is pretty expensive. At the $2/player cost of rating, that's a subsidy of approx. $10,000/year. Yes, I know "juniors are our future" yada yada yada, but when there is no money allocated for any other national program, that seems a little one sided.
Lets be fair: the fee will become a tax. (not many like taxes)
Will it increase membership? vs Will hard-core players still stay and pay? G.Ruben, your membership lapsed. Will you renew it if the fee (tax) would double? ;)

No. I don't play in OTB rated events. I haven't since the late 1970's. Last time I renewed my membership I was buying a subscription to a printed magazine. They don't have that these days.
I have a life membership in the CCCA and my chess donation this year, which would have paid for several years membership, went to the CCCA.
Governments can print money. Organizations have to get it from their members. It's really a simple concept. :)
Ken is desperately seeking uses for the increase in funds. The prizes for the zonal tend to be so low most of the GM's don't play and he needs to ask.
Ask a Canadian GM if he's planning on playing in an event and the reply is likely to be "not in this country".

Simplistic solutions to complex problems rarely work. CFC members are already paying a hefty price for what they get. Asking for more may bring a little more money short term, but in the long run it would stiffle growth. No serious organisation can live on dues only. Others sources of income must be developped, sponsorship for events and advertizing in CCN for general expenses. But as it is, CCN is a rather unattractive vehicle for advertizers. It does not appear often enough and it does not reach enough people. Somehow it should appear weekly (in a smaller size of course) and be free. As it is non-members can find ways to have it free anyway. The CFC might as well spread it around and multiply its readership, while making it more attractive to advertizers.

I offered to an Executive member to submit a bid to fully automate the rating system (with obvious checks and balances put in to avoid problems) and the response was "why would we want to do that?"
I hadn't considered the Junior subsidy but yes I suppose that could, in a way, be considered a "program" as well. Still, it's definitely a point that Juniors have perhaps been addressed and some money should be spent in other areas.

Um, to save money so we could have other programs, would be a good answer to that question.
Re: Re : Re: CFC online governor's meeting in progress
Jean, you're right about decent sponsorship and advertising not being likely. The circulation doesn't seem large enough for CCN.
As for the "hefty price", a cell phone plan might qualify. A CFC membership at around $3.50 a month does not. Nor would $7.00 per money be a "hefty price" for an adult membership. Although, who would give up their cell phone plan to play chess?
In any case, I don't think there will be an increase. From what I'm reading here more money is not necessary because the governors who have responded to me don't know for what they would use the money. Maybe that approximately $9,000. they will get from the FQE is enough. Is my figure correct because I've only seen it on the message boards?
I bet you could implement an automated system for a very marginal cost, and keep the same level of human support. You will find the amount of support required will go down some, and the support person will still validate cross tables but overall have less work to do because action is only required when a problem exists.
In 2 years' time, the job will be half of what it is now.

How many memberships are "two event" memberships like mine? $7/month sounds low, but $42/event is high when my sole benefit is a rating.
