General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The Fall CFC Governors On-line Meeting is discussing the CFC Newsletter, Canadian Chess News. It would be helpful to know what the reaction is to the newsletter, among members and the public, now that it has been around for a few years.
Could you please vote in this poll, to help the Governor discussion?
Thx.
Bob Armstrong, GTCL/ Ont. CFC Governor

CCN can become an ad for the CFC. Many businesses give out free info about themselves and things that interest the public because it generate interest.
I am a CFC member. I gave my email address last time I renewed. Still have not seen a newsletter.
The fact that you have to enter an obscure and changing password in order to access the content have me aiming my web browser to chesscafe.com and other destinations which don't require me to jump through such hoops.

If it is members-only, there are very few ways of controlling distribution...
The CCN was created to replace the old paper magazine largely because it was believed that CFC Membership used to include the printed magazine and there had to be something to replace 'that'. Perhaps the whole concept of membership in the CFC needs to be revisited. There are many online chess news websites that provide more than enough coverage of international events - there is no point in a Canadian e-zine covering events that (by definition) are long finished.
It does make sense for CCN to publish Canadian news (club news, Canadian players on the international scene, etc) but the fundamental question to be answered is: what is the benefit of CFC membership?
If the answer is limited to:
1. get a CFC rating
2. play in CFC tournaments
3. 'support' 1&2 and partially support the Canadian participation in National and International events
I think you will find limited takers (perhaps we have reached that point now!?)
I believe the last two Issues were not e-mailed to members. Rather, CFC had decided to put the newsletter onto the website, secured, and a password is mailed out to members, to allow them to access the Issue, if they are willing to make that effort. You should have received the e-mail though.

the percentage of CFC members who actually had access to the magazine used to be quite poor. Does anyone know if that percentage has improved? ( I do know that there have been campaigns to hunt down address for missing members....)
Also, has anybody thought about tracking the number of downloads of the magazine from the website to get some indication of popularity?
A very ill-conceived poll where all options are about "scaling down". What about options like " leaving it as it is " or " scaling down while publishing more often " etc, etc.
If polls such as this one really count for anything in making decisions for the future, then we are in even deeper trouble than we think.
When I want to know what's happening in Canada
-HPE(IM Hebert) is free
-TCN(Bob Armstrong) is free
-BCCF Bulletin(Steven Wright) is free
-TWIC is free
-Chesstalk is free
-CANBASE(Hugh Brodie) is free
When I want to know what's happening with Canadian players abroad
-Spraggett's blog is free
-TWIC is free but now is scaled down a bit without the initial Chessbase text file with nice crosstables etc
-Budapest Chess News is free
When I want to know what's happening in Australia
-ACN as a free newsletter
When I want to know what's happening in publishing
-New in Chess has a free newsletter
-Quality Chess has a free newsletter
So why pay for CCN?
Is it better at telling me somthing?
Is there a niche covered?
Is it better than the free material? Not sure
Bob, the idea that anything needs to be scaled back is taking us in the opposite direction of where we should be going.
Trimming fat is one thing, but if the goal of the CFC is to improve itself, it should be focusing on ways to grow.
We've already went from a magazine mailed to our doors to an email newsletter, and now most terribly, a password protected newsletter. I love the old magazines and enjoy flipping through them. I used to read the PDF newsletters on my iPad. But now, needing to enter a password every time I want to view it makes it unreasonably difficult. You might as well scrap the whole thing rather than keep it the way it is. If I was an advertiser, I'd drop out as quickly as possible.
If there is a question as to content, sure, go to more Canadian content. I am interested in reading well written reports on local events, and would like to see more of it. There is plenty of other resources out there on all other topics, so having something niche is a good move.
But the overall focus should be on growing, not cutting back. The CFC should be selling more. The online store is pretty weak, with prices that barely come close to competing.
Bottom line: Up the value. Start thinking like a business. Yes, there will always be us tournament players who are willing to pay their membership because we like our local events, but if Chess is ever to expand, there's got to be some real value behind it.
To be fair, the poll should also ask if members would be willing to pay a bit more ($10 per year) and have it returned to a bimonthly printed magazine.
