some data on tournament sizes in Canada for those who are interested....

Top 5 places are taken by Hart House and Victoria (!).

CFC events only, and tournament size for multi-sectional events was determined by considering consecutively numbered events in the CFC database with the same date & TD to be one event. So, occasionally this is maybe not correct (e.g. Canadian Senior Championship got lumped in with the Canadian Amateur, possibly some events are not entered consecutively, people playing in more than one section get counted twice)

    Largest non-junior events Sept.31 2011-Sept. 31 2012

    Hi,

It'd be most interesting to see how Quebec compares.
We might get embarassed a bit ;)

Re : Tournament size in Canada

Top 4 tournaments in Quebec, in this period, were :
Quebec Open (277) (410 if counting all the events at the same dates, but some players played in more than one)
      Mauricie Open (219)
      Montreal Open (163)
      Père-Noel (119).
All these tournaments, except for the Mauricie Open, had their top sections CFC and FIDE rated. Both the Mauricie Open and the Montreal Open had a severe drop in their size this year.

Larry - aren't some of the Montreal CMA team events quite large as well?

Ooops...you are correct...as usual...we use to draw over 600 kids...I believe the last couple of years the numbers were down...I will check it out.

            Thanks Hugh

2012 Windsor Chess Challenge approximately 1400 kids. Unfortunately this year's tournament will be about half of that due to the public school teachers work to rule campaign. Thank you Dalton McGuinty for the gifts that keep on giving.

A plot of the data in the original post as a cumulative distribution.

We can see that close to 80% of all events rated by the CFC are less than 25 people.

From other work I had known that a huge percentage of the events & players for the CFC are junior events (not to mention the CMA activity) but the amount of activity in such small events comes as a surprise to me.

Using only CFC is very misleading as more are cma rated. I noticed the omission of Corinna Wan's Ontario Girls' Ch. Francis has been doing an incredible job running monthly cma tournaments of over 100 players, as well as Leslie Armstrong handling large Chess Challenge qualifiers outside of Toronto. Are there more 100 player cma-rated junior events out of Quebec? I couldn't find them on the cma rating list.

I believe London gets about 1500 players for their annual "grade-by-grade" tournament, organised by Mon-Fai Lee.

The London organisers seem to have no interest in having their kids connect to the wider world of chess, whether the CMA Chess Challenge or the CFC Youth Championships.

I wonder why not cma rated? Toronto DSB has over 1,000 players in 4 regionals then 120 in a final which is also not rated. Windsor and London have massive tournaments, unrated.

Do Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Hamilton and other cities have large school tournaments, possibly unrated?

London just seems to do its own thing - Mon-Fai Lee has never replied to my emails.

In the case of Windsor, for at least 95% of the players, the annual Chess Challenge is the only time they will play tournament chess. The ratings wouldn't be of much use, why pay the rating fee. In addition, Windsor uses its own pairing system, which is time-consuming to convert to traditional systems.

Ten years ago, Cornwall used to get 600 or so for their annual inter-schools event. Don't know if that event continues.

Edit: Cornwall apparently reached a high of 872 players in 1997. Starting in 2000 was split to two events, March and November. http://www.audiapason.ca/page25/index.html
