  • Canadian GM's List?

I am trying to assemble the list of Canadian GM's ( who played under the Canadian Federation ). This is what I came up with - let me know how it has to be corrected ( if it needs it - I'm really unsure of the date order re becoming a Canadian GM ):

    1st GM Abe Yanofsky
    2nd GM Duncan Suttles
    3rd GM Peter Biyiasas
    4th GM Kevin Spraggett
    5th GM Alexandre LeSiege
    6th GM Pascal Charbonneau
    7th GM Dmitry Tyomkin
    8th GM Mark Bluvshtein
    9th GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon
    10th GM Bator Sambuev
    11th GM Eric Hansen

2 other Canadian GM's with other federations are:

    GM Anton Kovalyov - Argentina
    GM Wesley So - Philippines

    Thx for any help.

    Bob A

      Hi Gary:

Thx. I think he's after Kevin. I'll edit the original post.

See http://chess.ca/fide-titles#GM, although Joel Lautier does not belong on that list IMHO; Ivanov was not awarded the title until the last year of his life, but it has never been clear to me what his citizenship was at that point, US or Canadian.

            Some search:

FIDE transfer from USA to CAN (not a citizenship) - 2005-June-08 (http://ratings.fide.com/fedchange.phtml?year=2005 Here they list him as the CAN citizen)

GM title awarded (unofficially) - 2005-June-10 ( http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2475 "One of the highlights of the tournament was the awarding of the Grandmaster’s title before the start of the first round to Igor Ivanov, who also participated in the event. ")

There were several FIDE meetings in 2005: February 26-27, and May 14-15. Though no information about a title for I.Ivanov.

It might be that after a transfer FIDE certified a title too. Anyway, I.Ivanov was still a Canadian citizen.

            One more thing:

From the FIDE report for National Open:
            " 2000288 Ivanov, Igor V CAN g 2270 1 2 -3.6"

Thx to everyone for their help.

              Here is my new list:

The Canadian Grandmasters ( past and present ) are:

              1st GM Abe Yanofsky ( 1954 )
              2nd GM Duncan Suttles ( 1973 )
              3rd GM Peter Biyiasas ( 1978 )
              4th GM Kevin Spraggett ( 1985 )
              5th GM Alexandre Lesiège ( 1997 )
              6th GM Dmitri Tyomkin ( 2001 )
              7th GM Mark Bluvshtein ( 2004 )
              8th GM Igor Ivanov ( 2005 )
              9th GM Pascal Charbonneau ( 2006 )
              10th GM Bator Sambuev ( 2006 )
              11th GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon ( 2010 )
12th GM Eric Hansen ( to be awarded in 2012 )

3 other Canadian GM's with other federations are:

              GM Joel Lautier – France ( 1990 )
              GM Anton Kovalyov – Argentina ( 2008 )
              GM Wesley So – Philippines ( 2008 )

              Still any disagreements??

                Re : Canadian GM's List?

There's also Renier Castellanos, who lived in Montreal for a few years (and might still do).

                  Re: Canadian GM's List?

Castellanos (actually Castellanos Rodriguez) is listed by FIDE as an IM from Spain - so no official GM title yet.

How do you define a "Canadian GM with another federation"? If the only qualification was to live in Canada for a time, I could add Argentine GM Miguel Quinteros who lived in Montreal for a month or two in the 1970's (and Nakamura?).

I would not consider them "Canadian" unless FIDE shows then (now or in the past) with CAN beside their name.

                    Re: Canadian GM's List?

                    Additions to "Grandmasters in Canada"

Men GM Yona Kosashvili and Women GM (IM too) Sofia Polgar (a husband and a wife) lived several years in Toronto.

Frank Marshall, an original (not FIDE) GM, spent his youth years in Montreal.

Frank Marshall, an original GM, lived in Canada for a decade or more at a young age. I doubt we should claim him either.

If I'm reading the link correctly it's the other way round - he was transferring back to Canada from the US. (He presumably switched to the US in 1989 before playing in the US Championship in November of that year.) Anyway, it appears Ivanov was both a Canadian citizen and listed under the Canadian flag by FIDE when he received the GM title.

Did Tyomkin ever have any kind of status in Canada beyond being here as a visitor? It seems to me that is not enough to qualify someone as a Canadian GM.

He transferred his federation from Israel to Canada in 2002: http://ratings.fide.com/fedchange.phtml?year=2002.
