Re: Hart House Winter Open 2013

    Hi George,

That's correct, as per the time control. The time control must be uniform from game to game and within a section (since different sections can be considered practically different tournaments). We have a limited supply of clocks and the reason we use digital with increments for the top two sections is because these are rated with FIDE, where breaking the time control at move 30 is not recognized.
The pre-registered list is small at the moment, yes. People generally choose to register closer to the day, and because of that some organizers prefer publishing a list closer to the tournament. Giving our history of tournaments, I am not worried at all about having low numbers at the moment. The tournament is expected to have 100+ players and my guess is that 30+ will be playing the U1600 section.

Thanks Alex, sounds like it's worth to participate this tournament, just wondering since this is still in holiday season, why don't play 2 rounds on Friday and 1 round on Sunday so that people who lives far from Toronto don't have to worry about coming home midnight(or even 2am Monday depends how late the last round finish), and kids have to go to school on Monday, parents have to go to work Monday.

also wondering why this tournament is not listed under CFC website http://chess.ca/toronto-tournaments, it not easy to check chesstalk for a tournament ad.

        Hi,

I've sent CFC a form now to have it listed, thanks for spotting that.
We always also post the equivalent to chesstalk ad on the CFC Forum.

It is holidays season. However, I expect most adults to have to work Friday January 4th during the day. In the event that we catch a 3-day weekend, the tournament is 6 rounds. This way, only 5.
Perhaps it's a challenge worth surveying: to keep the more classical, longer type time controls, or to speed them up. We tried to follow the model for most tournaments preceeding ours in Toronto. Those games could have taken up to 6 hours. At Hart House they last about 5 hours maximum.
Round times are definitely a bit tough on people coming into Toronto, and we've discussed this many times. Especially on Sunday, in good part due to limitations in public transit (subway starting at 9am), it's tough starting the round any earlier than 10am. If there is a Friday night round, likewise if most people finish work around 5pm, it's impossible to start before 6.

Another possibility is to stick it at the top.

If you want to leave early, you
do not have to play in the last
            round.Tell the tournament
            director that you are withdrawing
            in the last round.:)

              Re: Looking good!

              Hi all,

We have over 40 entries now, after the list has doubled in the past 5 days.
We seem to be very much on track to our estimate 120. A good spread of players on the pre-registered list, although still missing the top guys!

We started slow with the entries, but have skyrocketed in the past two weeks and are now at 80 players, with some 12 days still to go. A bit scary if it keeps up with previous tournament trends.

Congratulations to the organisers - you've now passed 150 registered entries! Especially good to see the many entries at the 1200 level - you need those so that newcomers to tournament chess are not intimidated by a string of crushing defeats. If they win a game or two they'll keep coming back!
Also, you might update the prize list with the guarantee based on 150 players and the projected prizes based on 180 (200?) entries.
                            Excellent job! Well done!

                              Hi Vlad,

Thanks but... lets see if we can manage first :)
It's still unclear how many entries we will have in the end. As for the prize fund, it will consist of ~70% of the entries, as always.

                                Hi all,

Yikes! We are now at 160 Early Entries!
That means we have passed Labour Day's 156 players.

Note that today is the last day to drop me an e-mail for it to count as early entry. After today there is a $20 late fee penalty.

I will update the list by sections late tonight or tomorrow morning.
                                Remember to:

                                - Bring Sets & Clocks
                                - Come to GM Sambuev's Lecture at 3:30pm
                                - Arrive before 5:30pm if you're playing in the tournament
