I thought the Monty Python " Life of Brian " was pretty good too.

Foster Brooks was great in those roasts.

Dean Martin had done a lot of comedy with Jerry Lewis so I guess it might have been routine for him to deliver his funny lines.

-Monty Python (Holy Grail, Life of Brian) for sure
-History of the World Part 1("It's Good to be the King!")
-Early Woody Allen movies (e.g. 'Sleeper', 'Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex')
-Spaceballs (loved Rick Moranis' Darth Vader spoof!)
-Marx Bros.(Duck Soup, A Day at the Races, A Night at the Opera, Monkey Business)

It's great to be able to laugh, not always automatic for me.

On TV last month I again saw Galaxy Quest (1999) USA a very funny Star Trek spoof.

I've enjoyed many of the films listed so far like Monty Python, Caddyshack, The Producers, and early Woody Allen. Of the Marx Brothers, Karl was the funniest.

But also Airplane! (1980), Private Benjamin (1980), Stripes (1981), Coming to America (1988), Erik the Viking (1989), Clerks (1994), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1999), South Park (1999), Borat (2006), Superbad (2007)

              funny chess films!?

              1. I though Ivory Tower (2010) Canadian with Chilly Gonzales and Feist was a funny movie.

              2. Hatley High (2003) Canadian is ridiculous, lacking in knowledge of chess.

              3. Chess Fever (1925) Shakhmatnaya goryachka USSR 28 min silent film with Capablanca. Written, co-directed by Nikolai Shpikovsky

              4. Knight to F4 (2009) USA No-budget amateur film about a former child prodigy returns to school as an adult and enters school event.

I find myself laughing like a loon every time I watch The Big Lebowski . There are no other movies that have this effect on me .

The Marx brothers did slapstick comedy. Didn't they and others like Laurel and Hardy start in the silent film era?

Ishtar was hilarious, as was Water World...

A few that haven't been mentioned that had me laughing pretty hard.

Animal House (John Belushi on a ladder)
                            Dumb and Dumber (toilet humour)
The Pink Panther (the original and sequels with Peter Sellers).

the marx bros should certainly not be classified as slapstick comedy

they started in the vaudeville scene. none of their films are silent
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

Their one silent film was never released. I liked the three stooges better for the comedy. Chaplin was one I didn't enjoy.

Buster Keaton, from silent movies, is probably better known for his Superman films and characterization. He wasn't a comedian even if some of the films are funny to watch these days.
