  • most active TDs

The topic of TDs came up recently for me so I thought I would produce this list - most active TDs Dec. 2010 to Dec. 2012. Multiple sections have been screened for by considering events with the same TD and finish date as one event. Active events are included. Table goes down to 10 events in the last two years. In all, there were 159 people who TD's at least one tournament.

I would have done a similar table for organizers but that data is not available, although in many cases, the TD and the organizer are one and the same.

    Re: most active TDs

    Roger,

Interesting statistics, but could you check your calculations please?
I was curios about my own stats, what made makes up my 21 tournaments?

    My own summary shows:
    Hamilton 6
    Burlington 8
    Mississauga 9
    Total 23

Which does not agree to your list. Also, I find it hard to believe there was 159 TD's over that 2 year period. It would be great if it was true, but really?

Some of those numbers seem ridiculously high to me, an adult weekend swisser. Do they include weekly kids' tournaments run by chess coaches/schools or something like that?

The list I have for you is below. (the 1 at the end indicates a separate tournament, a 0 indicates a section). Total 21.

It's possible some of your tournaments are listed in the database under someone else or perhaps outside the date range.

          Re: most active TDs

All of David Peng's events appear to be PMCA (Philip Math and Chess Academy) events. (I didn't see one non-Chinese name in the crosstables I looked at).

yes (and potentially matches as well.) Below is the list for the most active person (might get cut off by the ChessTalk software but whatever gets through should give you a flavour of what's going on). As in my reply to Bob, 1 at the end indicates a separate tournament, 0 indicates a section.
Also indicated are regular rated (R) and active rated (A). You can see the effect of our auditor - the earlier tournaments are all regular rated, the later ones active.

Tournament #, Tournament name, date, TD #, Regular/active rated, Newtournment/section

It would be good to see how many players TDs served over the period (total number, and total name number if possible; in other words how much $$$ they contributed to the CFC. approximately)

Dec. 4 actually. (I did say the time period was Dec. 2010 to Dec. 2012) But I guess the one at the end of Nov. didn't make it to Gerry by that date.

except that might be misleading as junior events are $0.50 per player to rate and require no membership (in which case it would be how much $$$ they cost the CFC).

It's certainly possible to do that. I'll think about it.

well, I don't disagree but it's hard to separate out things like junior events or club events. Certainly it would be nice if this stuff could be broken down more - it would help with understanding what the true picture of activity in Canada is like, dependence on a relatively small number of high "producing" TDs & organizers, the astonishing amount of junior events, and understanding what the workload of the business office is really like.

                            Re: most active TDs

When I was GTCL Secretary I made annual lists of activity (2002-10 from the Mark Dutton era to Bryan Lamb). I would list the TD's by the number of games and Roman Pelts (weekly junior tournaments) would usually top the list. With Juniors now being rated Active it should be easier to separate.

                            Here's my 2007 report:

Last year [2006] there were 100 CFC rated events with 3,135 players who played 7,847 games. The number of games is nine per cent lower than 2005, but higher than 2004 and 2003. The total number of games in non-junior events is only two per cent lower than 2005, but is 19 per cent lower than 2004. The nine weekend tournaments saw an increase in number of games played of 20 per cent to equal the total in 2004. There has been increased activity in York, Scarborough and Burlington.

Roman Pelts FT, Chess Academy of Canada, had 15 fewer events and five percent fewer games but had a slightly higher share, 44 per cent of all of the games. He once again had the highest number of games 3,471.

Vlad Dobrich had 16 fewer events, a 15 per cent drop in the number of games in addition to his 2005 nine per cent drop from his peak of 1,275 games in 2004. However, he remains the top director of tournaments open to adults. The Bayview Games Club had reduced the number of weekend tournaments to four, but had an average of 44 entrants, higher than for any single event there since it was the Dutton CC (avg. 68.5). However, the GTCL weekend events at BGC won’t hold the same number as participated at Tartu.

Bryan Lamb had fewer events and a drop of 18 per cent in the number of games. The Labour Day Open had a drop of 21 per cent of entrants, but remains the largest annual event with a four-year average of 140 entrants (eight-year average of 137), twice as large as any other location. The number of players in his Scarborough CC tournaments has increased by 52 per cent to the highest total in years, despite being open only one night a week (and a few location moves).

Barry Thorvardson, OCA President, has created new events north of Toronto and the number of games in his events have increased by 347 per cent. Although trying the Pro-Am there instead of Guelph didn’t work, the total entrants at the Curling Rink were similar to Tartu.

Christopher Field has directed high school events for over 20 years and totals bounce dramatically year to year depending if the Ontario High School event is in Toronto and CYCC regionals. 2006 was a low year with five fewer events and a drop of 46 per cent.

Mark S. Dutton IA has directed two recent Canadian Championships which has helped players to get FIDE ratings and titles. Hosting of national championships such as Junior and Women, although not yearly, are a regular part of Toronto activity.

Larry Bevand IA has been increasing his totals by over ten per cent each year for the Thanksgiving Open at Tartu and almost broke 100 entrants The average of recent events at Tartu has been 72 entrants. Unfortunately, the high rent is a deterrent.

James E. Lehmann had more events at the Burlington CC and a large increase in the number of games of 73 per cent.

Larry Luiting of the Oshawa CC has dropped sixty per cent from the amazing year they had in 2004, but runs six tournaments a year.

John R. Brown has increased the number of rated games he has in tournaments in his home. Caesar Posylek is still having an annual junior tournament at the Polonia CC. The U of T championship, perhaps the oldest event in Toronto, has lately been rated.

In past years we lost the rated games played previously at Rouge Valley (Sam Sharpe/Ermanno Mucignat), Oriole (Shivaharan Thurairasah), Seneca Hills (Corinna Wan), and the Alekhine Chess School (Viatcheslav Sviridovitch). Omararay Shah is still around and David Cohen IA is involved in his chess school. There are unrated tournaments held at the Mississauga CC and casual games prosper at The Chess Corner (Queen and Church), weather permitting.

Outside of the GTCL, Hal Bond has established Guelph as the major place for weekend tournaments. The Pro-Am International has become a summer tournament in the tradition of the Toronto International at the Primrose Hotel and the North Bay International, averaging 138 players over three years. The 16 Winter/Spring/Fall Pro-Ams have averaged 62 entrants and had an incredible 103 players this past February.

For those planning class tournaments the distribution by class and average over the past four years might be interesting to note:

                            2006 2003-06 (16 events)
                            Open 15 16
                            U2200 13 12
                            U2000 21 21

The chess schools may be the prime source of players for the U1600, the largest section. School tournaments are divided by grade so open tournaments give the keener youth an opportunity to play against stronger players. Chess‘n Math one-day tournaments have had over 400 entrants. Their rating system might merge with the CFC in the future.

Data tables for overall review, each half year, and weekend tournaments are available upon request.

Preston Reed McInnis is a local secondary student - if he is organising CFC chess tournaments he is keeping it a deep dark secret. Maybe they are in-school events.

A crosstable search for director McInnis returned "No results matched your search for: Organizer: McInnis, Tournament Date (Start Range): 2010-01-01, Tournament Date (End Range): 2012-12-31"

It is interesting to see that the search mask for crosstables asks for "director", but returns "organiser".
