Re: Ive been enjoying Eric Hansen games

I have been enjoying a Hansen game from the ninth round of the Gibraltar Festival.

He was winning then faltered with 28.c6. His opponent has had some missteps but they finally halved the point. One round to go, with Ivanchuk, Kamsky and MVL at the top.

Very impressive Eric! Holding your own against 2700 strength opposition! Is the next breakthru happening? I missed the game with my morning coffee because of chess teaching but I still enjoyed it and I got to tell the students all about you.

I had the chance to watch the game live due to the snowfall. Looked like Eric had good winning chances, then Li Chao wanted to win a simple drawn game. Eric is one point away from Ivanchuk with two rounds to go. No small achievement. Maybe, who knows...

An excellent result for Eric and a confidence builder - definitely the best result of the Canadian contingent. Congratulations Eric.

The Canadian newsletter January has an excellent article by GM Eric Hansen on his move to Europe. I admire his thorough honesty and annotations and of course greatly enjoyed all the games with my morning coffee! Cheers!!

Ive been enjoying Eric's games in Rejkjavik. Ive been playing the Kan Sicilian on and off for 40 years and he taught me a new trick in it so my observations are paying off.

Re: Ive been enjoying Eric Hansen games

Rd 4 Eric had a lovely positional win against GM Berkes (former 2700 and Hungarian Olympic Team). Eric ran the D-pawn down the D-file and before he could jam it home his opponent resigned.

Rd6 I enjoyed Eric's game and thought he was winning but somehow it led to a draw?

                      Rd 7 Rejkjavik My morning coffee was delayed today but it timed with the end of Erics delightful win against GM Djurhuus. Eric as Black played the Grunfeld and creatively got a large position: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Qb3 dxc4 5.Qxc4 Be6 6.Qb5 Bd7 7.Qb3 c5 8.d5 b5 9.Nxb5 Na6 10.Nc3 Rb8 11.Qd1 Qa5 12.f3 Bg7 13.e4 Nc7 14.Kf2 c4 15.g3 0-0 16.Kg2 Nfe8 17.Qd2 Nd6 18.Nh3 f5 19.Nf2 Ncb5 20.Nxb5 Qxb5 21.e5 Bxe5 22.Nd1 f4 23.Nc3 Qb7 24.g4 Bxg4 25.fxg4 f3 26.Kh3 Qd7 27.Qg5 Nf7 28.Qh4 h5 0-1 White's king position shatters after the nice bishop sac 24...Bxg4!! and then f3 .

Eric Hansen's Rd 8 game today was classic play with the two bishops and passed pawn themes. His win has him in good position going into the last round (albeit with several others) tied for second a half point behind Li Chao.

Eric did a long commentary (45 minutes ) for the webcast too.

                          You can find it here:

                          http://new.livestream.com/chesslives...events/2827458

                          starts around 3:40

BTW: if Eric draws or wins vs Naiditch in round 9 he will pass 2600.

I missed this earlier so thx John. The main thing I took from Eric's commentary is surprisingly he was out of theory early in the Grunfeld but if you know what to do in a position (where to place your pieces) you can play well intuitively. Good stuff. (Also foreshadowing the next issue of the e-mag!)

With a draw he will pass 2600 just if he can get 1 bonus point from CFC :-)

He needed to do the first step:

"A Canadian may have a foreign FIDE-rated tournament count for their CFC rating by sending a letter to that effect in advance to the CFC. (And include $25 in advance with the letter sent to the CFC office. The letter should be received by the CFC office not less than 1 month before the start of the event, and include the $25 flat rating fee. - CFC Office policy effective December 1st, 2003) The CFC will rate the event only to the extent that FIDE does. Results must be reported within one month after the tournament is completed. Failure to submit a crosstable after registering an event bars the player from registering a tournament participation for three years. [see Motion 78-15; GL, April 1978, p. 39]"
