Great job with the live games! Too bad Western couldn't send a team this year, but I will be following the results. :)

Round 2 has started. Small upsets in the first round with both favorites : Ottawa-Waterloo and McGill (B) - Waterloo (C).

Yes, the endgames were pretty exciting this round (and probably frustrating for some players).

McGill won the Open section and Concordia the U1800 section. We should be able to post full individual results by tomorrow.
Thanks to all those who came to Montreal for this event (17 teams in total).

                    1) What the hell happened to Toronto1???

                    2) Congrats to Ottawa (seeded 5th initially) for an impressive 2nd placing overall

                    3) Jason Riordon (2035) from Ottawa with the highest board score in the entire tournament (4.5/5!) and had to beat a 2300, 2280, and 2130 en route.

                    4) Congrats to McGill for winning the tournament! It looks like a streak is being created where the host school always takes home the trophy. :D

Jason's performance was really impressive. It might be good to say that his name is already on the Queen's Cup for Chess, as he played for McGill a couple of years ago.

Next year, the CUCC should be organized by Carleton, so we'll try to keep the title and beat the trend :)

Good tournament. Congrats McGill. 12 masters - not bad. Its nice to see Master Voloaca still playing. Is he a life student?:)

                            Hi,

We trekked to Montreal to play in the CUCC, and we did. There were a lot of fun stories. Our final score doesn't seem to, in my opinion, do full justice to our performance. No doubt that we didn't deserve to win, but 1.0/5 ? Yikes! We 4-0'd McMaster in the first round, although on one board the position was totally lost before it was turned around. Our match against McGill, a quick draw on one of the boards, and 3 very intense, balanced fights until the very end where results could easily have been different. We lost to McGill 1.5-2.5. We then faced an on-fire Ottawa. We had lost a match already and from then on, we simply had to try to win the rest. Points were thrown away by pushing too hard. 1-3, Ottawa wins. By then the tournament was different. By no means did we fail to fight, but we also faced some determined opposition in Waterloo B team. Again we lost 1.5-2.5. Finally we played Waterloo A, who was seeded # 1 but already had no hopes of winning the tournament. We were outrated on every board and again, scored 1.5-2.5, after our last game blew up a win in time pressure.

In any case... no excuses. We scored 1.0/5, 9.5/20 and got ourselves to blame, though kudos to the competition. I don't feel like we were ever a push-over.

The real story was... our B team, also in the top section, scored 2.5/5 match points (with 8.5 individual points), kudos to them! They even had an 1100 player on board 4 because we had a huge gap below the 1700 mark. The team was Emanuel Cousin, Jack Ding, Adie Todd and Amir Ghandhari. They'll all go up in ratings.

Our C team in the U1800 section was composed of 4 unrated players, and they all enjoyed the experience, even if they performed not so well.

Great job, McGill, for a well-organized tournament and enjoyable experience.

My Round 4 game, where I lost to unrated player Edison Fong:

                            Fong,E - Ferreira,A
                            Canadian Universities Chess Championship, 13.01.2013

I thought I had an awesome attack in the early stage of the game. I thought 16...Qd4 was clever because I wanted to prevent white from consolidating by pushing the pawn to d3. But it turns out the immediate 16...Bf5 would be superior, but by no means crushing according to computer analyzes. The plan after, of swapping the knight by the bishop on g4 was not so good either. And finally I had a lapse in concentration and blundered in the recapture with 19...Nxe4 instead of 19...Rxe4. It turns out that the line actually looks pretty scary and computer evaluation claims that with correct play, white gives black a perpetual. Instead... in the game ... I thought I could win a piece with 20...h5, and missed the move Rf1 threatening Qf7+ taking charge of the position. After that, I was simply down two pawns and my opponent played well to convert.

Is this a horrendous loss for a 2000 rated player? I was quite upset with myself at the time for not playing 19...Rxe4, but clearly that shouldn't have won the game as I thought it would.

In any case... Congrats to McGill for winning the tournament, Concordia for taking the U1800! And a big congrats to Toronto B Team who really impressed!

Instead justice was served to us. There's no way to sugar coat this. We had a terrible performance (except maybe for Alex) and are awful chess players. Our grand total of 1/5 was pathetically amusing.

To compound our problems, our inflated ratings made other teams take us slightly more seriously which really left us no chance to win. The B team is actually the A team (typographic error when submitting lineups).

Thanks to the organizers and everyone involved in making the tourney a thoroughly humiliating but enjoyable experience. ;-)
