Typo by me, I meant the last move of the game: 34.Qg6.

I'd assumed doubling on the e-file would win unproblematically, but your line is simpler.

    34.Qg6 Be7 wins after 35.c5!, since taking with 35.....bxc5 loses the B to 36.Qe4.

        Hi Halldor,

Congratulations on your efforts with this event! You have some good players which makes it interesting to all.

Perhaps in the future, if you, and Charles Tremblay in Quebec City could coordinate, both events could draw a few more players. I was in Quebec City yesterday...a very nice event...some very strong players there also...total participation was 78.

It was the Quebec Carnival tournament...so the city was packed...

The Quebec Carnival will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2014. This is what one wrtiter had to say about Quebec Carnival:

Held in the first part of February, it transforms the city into one massive outdoor party. It is the largest winter celebration in the world and the third largest carnival only surpassed by those held in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.
In 2004, from January 30 to February 15, it will be a special year. The Carnival's 50th anniversary will be celebrated in a accelerated flurry of winter fun.

For 49 years this renowned festival, drawing annually one million visitors, held in what has become known as the ‘world’s snow capital’, has been generating jobs and a good deal of economic, social and tourism-related spin offs for the city and the surrounding area. The Carnival has now become Québec City’s third largest industry, generating direct economic returns of $28 million a year and surpassing its organizers’ wildest dreams.

More than 400 activities and shows extend to visitors a festive experience full of competitions, concerts, fun, games and food in an aura of winter magic. Known as the ‘Mardi Gras in the Snow’, it is a joyous celebration, enjoyed by residents and travellers alike. Some one million residents and visitors, a good number coming from other countries in the world, travel to the winter-clad Québec City to share in its art, culture, entertainment and sports in an aura of sparkling ice and snow.

The first Carnival, at that time an event for carousing and drinking, was held in 1894 to provide a welcome relief from the city’s harsh winters. Thereafter, the Carnival was organized sporadically until 1955 when it became an annual event. With the help of the city’s businessmen, it was established as a family oriented event and it has blossomed ever since.

In that year, the Carnival also adopted the mascot-symbol, Bonhomme. Subsequently, this creature’s toothless grin and joyful appearance, along with its red stocking cap and a knitted multi-coloured red, blue and white sash, made it a children’s delight. Bonhomme’s ceinture fléchée (arrow sash) is one of the Carnival’s most popular traditions. In the past, people tied it tight around the waist to support the back and provide warmth. Bonhomme has brought it back into fashion as a symbol of merry-making and pride in the Carnival.

Yesterday, Chess'n Math was asked unofficially to work with the organizers to put on a memorable event in 2014...we should talk :)

Thanks Larry. I thought these events were far enough away that there would be little overlap in terms of drawing players. However, there is no need to have these events on the same weekend.

Our leader Aris Marghetis puts the EOCA schedule together. We should coordinate these things next year. The only constraint on the timing of events in here in Ottawa is that we have to work with the RA Centre for available dates to have the site.

Don't forget that Ottawa is holding Winterlude ending with a bang this weekend. Perhaps not quite Carnaval but not too shabby for those who can find the time to enjoy the world's biggest skating rink, wonderful ice sculptures, etc.

              Hi Halldor,

Thanks! You have always been a positive force!

Next year we would like to do something major, so If CMA is part of the equation, I will make sure everyone is in the loop! Quebec City at Carnival time is totally crazy ...and there have been some very interesting chess tournaments there in the past :).

BTW...CMA has moved away from the RA Centre this year...maybe we should talk about that also. It is a great site for the club (probably the best in the country!) but maybe for weekend events you can do better for less dollars elsewhere.

You mean that Canal of yours is frozen at last...I thought I would have to move to Conneticut to see winter again :)

Gord, I think we both agree that we can make this work for everyone.

I took some pictures of the event I would like to share with you.

                      1) Overview of the playing site.

                      2) Sambuev looking at the action on board 4 Gordon-Zhou. Smilovici and Qin are in the background.

                      3) Cova-Qin, yes it was a draw.

                      4) Doubleday on board 1 where he has previously won against Sambuev! Smilovici-Qin, Gordon-Zhou and Sun-Valdizon.

                      5) Dave Gordon on board 1 in round 4.
