    I recall that as a junior I often got slaughtered when defending up material in gambits against opposition that was even or superior in skill to my own... then again, juniors typically seem to have a higher level of skill or opening knowledge these days, especially after even a little instruction or studying on their own, say with a computer.

        Everyone seems to be taking my comment out of context. I never said gambits can't be played at more serious levels, I was saying that it's doubtful a typical school kid would be able to open with a gambit and then play quietly; rather that it would force them to press their advantage.
