  • Strongest AB Closed in history

The AB Closed is scheduled to take place in Calgary on March 29-31.
For the first time a Grandmaster will take part in the event.
The average CFC rating is 2414 and FIDE 2346. In fact, the average would have been substantially higher if not for a certain very low rated participant!

The AB Reserves Championship will take place alongside the Closed. The website for the Reserves can be found at:

Probably the strongest championship ever held in any province.

It's very impressive, I must admit... Still, I wouldn't be surprised if there would have been a stronger provincial championship in Ontario. The Quebec Championship had very strong players too. If we take a look at the 2009 tournament, there was lots of strong players. However, to allow GM and IM norms, the organizers also invited foreign GMs (Bhat and Bluvshtein) :

Since the last 3 years, the Quebec Invationnal has been merged with the Quebec Open, so the first section is the strongest in Canada and although there's usually 3 Quebec GMs, most GMs are not Canadian, so we cannot compare the tournaments.

That said, I wish more provinces organized a similar tournament (with great prizes to participate in the Canadian Open)!

Perhaps I am bringing down the average rating enough to make it not strongest:-)
Anyway, its definitely strong enough to make me freak out for the last little while!

:p Check out Eric's terrible draw here:
            • three Blacks (incl. two against the 2nd and 3rd highest rated opponents),
            • two Whites (incl. one against a "certain very low rated participant" not named by the OP.)

I would not dismiss the Québec Invitationals of the 80' with Spraggett, Ivanov and myself, although the trio found itself together only once or twice.

We have to get every advantage we can:-) Of course, my pairings are no better, even though we kind of have different goals in this tournament!

The tournament organizer left as the last game went past midnight so the games and results will be posted on the website tomorrow.

                  Round 1 results:

                  IM Wang-GM Hansen 1/2-1/2
                  IM Porper-FM Pechenkin-1-0
                  NM Yam-NM Rekhson 1/2-1/2
