  • Quebec Open : a special invitation for women

The Quebec Chess Federation has decided to invite women to participate in the invitational section of the Sponge Towels Quebec Open. The FQE strongly believes that offering such an incredible opportunity to some women (especially the youngest ones) could help many young girls to keep an interest in chess.

Therefore, the invitation requirements will be lowered by 200 points for Canadian women. To be invited, they will need a FIDE rating of at least 2000 (no exception or consideration of other ratings).
Here are the qualified players, as of today :

    # Name Title Fed Rating G B-Year
    1 Khoudgarian, Natalia wm CAN 2136 0 1973
    2 Kazakevich, Anastasia CAN 2033 0 1988
    3 Botez, Alexandra wc CAN 2024 0 1995
    4 Peng, Jackie wf CAN 2001 0 1998

Jackie Peng has already confirmed her interest into the tournament. Any other qualified player can send me an email (felixdumont (at) fqechecs.qc.ca).

We hope that more promising young women will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in Canada's strongest tournament.

Note : Standard entry fee ($80 for junior players and $100 for adults) is necessary.

What conditions do these women receive?

Stronger women (who have a higher FIDE rating) might receive special conditions (WGMs were offered free accommodation in the past).

However, for the above mentionned women, the FQE cannot offer any conditions (most players from the invitational don't get any conditions). Still, they have the opportunity to play in the strongest Canadian tournament (average FIDE rating of 2426 as of today), for only $80, which is already a great opportunity.

I agree Felix. Thank you for the opportunity you are giving all women chess players in Canada.

          Hi Felix:

WIM Yuanling Yuan has a FIDE rating of 2200.

She is Canadian and currently studying in university in USA. As far as I know, she will be back in Canada in the summer - she lives in Toronto.

She currently plays chess in a top level team league in USA. The team is called the Clippers I think.

Is she also eligible? If so, I could pass on any e-mail to her sent to me (bobarm@sympatico.ca)

            Hi Bob,
I can do it. I invited her every year, but she unfortunately couldn't play. She wasn't on the above list, as she is not active (for FIDE). We would obviously be glad to have her playing in the tournament.

              Hi Felix:

I've sent the posts above by e-mail to Yuanling.

I've asked that she advise you if interested: either posting here or by e-mail (I provided her your e-mail)

The usual cutoff is 2200 FIDE... The FQE decided to allow women with a FIDE rating of at least 2000 to participate, but this requirement is really strict. Unfortunately, Liza Orlova has a FIDE rating of 1942, which is close but not enough.
Having too many players with a FIDE rating under 2200 could break some norm chances, which could be very disappointing for players. Nearly every year, Canadian players manage to get norms in this tournaments (such as IM Noritsyn who scored a GM norm 2 years ago), and we hope to keep it this way.

Still, she could play in the Open section, in which we can usually find pretty strong players. There are usually a couple of national masters and plenty of players of 2000-2100 strength like her (there are even stronger players from time to time, such as IM Hebert, WGM Anna Zozulia in 2009, FM Marat Khassanov, FM Vahagn Voskanyan...).

Yes, great point Felix. Unless you are 2000+ FIDE and are a junior you shouldn't be playing in the Invitational section. Also keep in mind of players that are 2000+ FIDE but are from secluded areas like Manitoba, Saskatchewan, BC, NFL, etc...

Re : Quebec Open : a special invitation for women

                          Hello Andrei,
I was asked by the FQE executive director to invite only "active women with a FIDE rating of at least 2000". Unfortunately, many women stopped playing. As I understand it, this initiative was to give an opportunity to those that are still playing, so they don't stop like most of the others. Obviously, the FQE doesn't want to invite to many players with a FIDE rating under 2200, since we want to keep the tournament very strong.
Still, if one of the women listed in your post desires to come back to play, I could ask the FQE if she can be invited :)

WIM Yuanling Yuan, highest FIDE-rated active (in USA recently) Canadian woman, playing for Canada, advised me that her summer work in Canada will conflict with her attending your tournament. So she will unfortunately have to decline the invitation.

She advised she will be e-mailing you directly on this.
