  • Calgary International update

There have been some news articles in regards to Wesley So participating in a Philippino tournament during the dates of the Calgary International.

Wesley confirmed to me that this report is incorrect as he will be playing in Calgary.

The International section has 5 Grandmasters among the 20 confirmed players.

There is time to register for both the International and Reserves sections of the International. You can view the details at: http://calgaryinternationalchessclassic.com/index.html

Please note that at this point in time, we will limit the amount of sub 2100 FIDE players in the "International" to two more, unless more 2300+ rated players will join.

Once again this tournament will be an incredible opportunities for players looking for a norm. If only Canada had more than two such tournaments (Quebec Open and Calgary International)... How many norms were obtained in the previous years?

4 IM norms. Eric Hansen twice in 2009 and 2010, Dale Haessel (2011), Vladimir Pechenkin (2012). Essentially one norm per year!

In addition to the afforementioned events lets not forget the Edmonton International! The website should be out soon. It is a Round-Robin with GM/IM norm opportunities and Micah Hughey is just waiting for one more player to confirm.

True. I forgot to mention it. However, last year's tournament was far from ideal to get norms (although the tournament was really interesting to watch).

Rob Gardner made an IM norm in Edmonton last year.
