General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: Burn calories like you're a baboon. Play chess.
As Wayne Komer posted in his Sinquefield commentary, Giri (who's never lost to Carlsen in 9 classical encounters, one win and eight draws) took a bit of a shot at Carlsen.
Giri: "My wife knew about 7...g5 in that Sicilian (Carlsen-Topalov) I don't know why Carlsen didn't"
Often the Filipino and Indian Press have a sports reporter describe a chess match, as a sports item, and using boxing terminology.
Here is a heart-thumping example from a more sobre writer, Mike Klein, writing in chess.com
To set up the scene – it is Round Two of Sinquefield Cup 2015. In Caruana-Carlsen, the two players are in a mad time scramble:
“Both players found themselves in severe time pressure leading up to move 40. Caruana had less sand in his hourglass and that proved to be his downfall. Nearly any other reasonable move besides his final would have given him a chance for a plus. The problem? He had only four seconds before triple zeros would appear. "It got a bit out of control... It's hard when you have a couple of seconds," Carlsen said. "Rxd2 is just reflex. It's hard but it can happen."
Caruana's clock management became more dire with nearly every move. He had only one minute and five seconds to make the final 10 moves, then was reduced to 15 seconds for seven more. He did technically make the standard, then resigned immediately afterward due to his blunder on move 40. Carlsen originally had much more time than his opponent, but then dwindled perilously close to zero himself. He admitted that after the misguided 27... b4, "there was no emergency exit. I thought I should start playing for tricks." He made his 40th and winning move with about three seconds left also.”
"Chess is too earnest for a game, too much of a game to be earnest about."
(Felix Mendelssohn, world-class music composer, 1809-1847, and an occasional chess player.)
"Chess gave me the opportunity to further an ambition, and at the same time convinced me of the futility of the ambition."
(Alexander Alekhine, 1892-1946, World Chess Champion 1927-1935 and 1937-1946.)
I think Anish Giri has a great sense of humour although it is easy to take him too seriously as Baadur Jobava once did.
Recall the press conference after their game at the Tashkent Grand Prix, 2014
Jobava: "Hey, if you continue ironic I'll say another few words to you and the press conference is over, so speak normally, ok?" (Giri keeps smiling) "Not smile like idiot! I'm not the guy you can ironic. (Giri stops smiling) - Speak normal, you must respect your opponent."
________
This in a Giri interview yesterday with Jennifer about being the best dressed at Sinquefield Cup 2015:
Giri went in to a mock rant when Jennifer Shahade suggested Magnus might just win the prize for the best-dressed player in the Sinquefield Cup: "Have you got some problems with that, Jennifer? Tying with Magnus, did you say? Magnus? The guy’s wearing the same thing every day and he doesn’t even buy it, he got it from the sponsor. Jesus. I cannot believe it. I cannot believe it! Incredible! I’ll talk to Rex, she’ll get fired for next time.”
A chart of the prize structure is given with awards to the top twenty players, best of several classes and so forth. Sort of sandwiched between the prizes for oldest and for youngest player is this:
A “yurt” is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by the nomads in the steppes of Central Asia.
There is an old news story online about Kirsan Ilyumzhinov that uses the word in an expression about keeping his presidential position warm, if he needs to return:
Many in the republic think that even if Ilyumzhinov is not granted the opportunity to run for a third term, he will nevertheless succeed in finding a loyal replacement to "guard his yurt" in his absence.
______
I have been amused by the thought that someone in Elista could open a shop that sold flavoured yogurts and real-estate and name it “Gurts and Yurts”.
See “The resistable rise of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov” at
In the World Cup Baku 2015, personal pens and watches have been banned from the tournament floor, which caused Roger de Coverly to ask on the EC Forum:
Are they still using zero default times? It’s a double hit to demand that players be on time, but deny them the means to achieve this.
