Can anyone tell me what the layout of the playing rooms will be like? How far from the top boards will spectators be permitted? I am wondering if it will be just as good to watch the games on MONROI as to be there at this event? Will there be large demonstration boards running for the top boards?

Will any used chess book dealers be present?

Is there a special hotel rate available for spectators of this event?

What activities are planned during the event?

Is there any of Hampton Inn/Hilton/Doubletree/Hilton Garden Inn/Embassy/Homewood hotels within a mile and a half of the playing venue?

I do not see any of this information on the website.

    Hi Ken,

I will do my best to answer your questions although I am not involved in the organization of this event.

The tournament is being held in the cafeteria of the CEGEP du Vieux Montreal. It is centrally located and the preferred site of the Quebec Open for most of the last 3 decades. The CEGEP has had construction and air conditioning challenges at times in the past...hopefully that is all behind them by now...the cost of the site is around $5000-6000 for the event which is incredibly reasonable for a downtown location.

The room for the top section is nice and spectatrors are fairly close to the top boards...at least that has been the case in the past.

Used books...unlikely. Strategy Games is within a 5 minute walk from the site. At this point we have not been approached by the CFC to sell at the event. The FQE approached us and I advised them to work this out with the CFC...the longer they wait...the less likely I will have staff available...it is summer and people are booking their vacations...I mentioned this to Les Bunning of the CFC last week but have not heard back as of yet.

I do not believe their are special rates for lodging. This is high season in Montreal and with the Just for Laughs Festival on, you can expect to pay a premium...if you can find something.

Planned activities during the event...normally nothing...there is a blitz at the end of the tournament which is usaually weel attanded.

There is a Doubletree Hotel less than a 1 minute walk from Strategy Games and within 5 minutes of the tournament site. It is located on the corner of Sherbrooke Street and Berri.

Actually, I haven't had a Schwartz Smoked Meat sandwich or Green Spot steamies in some time, so it could be a nice visit!

          Hi Ken,

Well, it is probably a good thing you moved to Toronto..with a regular diet of smoked meat and steamies...I don't know how long you would have lived :). If you do come to Montreal, please look me up!

            Correction

Sorry I was just informed by, Richard Bérubé, who is the Executive Director of the FQE, that the rates at the CEGEP have gone up substantially from my days (2003)...they are now charging around $11,000 for the event.

I know that sounds expensive, but believe me...it really still is well below market rates...even in Montreal...and you can only imagine what the cost would be in downtown Toronto :).

We recently paid around $5,000 plus tax at a downtown Montreal hotel for 1 day!

              Re: Canadian Open Chess Championship

With costs like $11,000 room rental, it is little wonder that organizers have a tough time putting on events in major cities. With 200 participants, you're looking at $55 per entrant just for the room rental. Putting together a decent prize package on top of that, you're looking at a pretty big financial commitment for the organizers.

As Larry suggested, Toronto rates would probably be even worse. Ouch!

Everything rises with inflation. Everything, that is, except for tournament entry fees. ;-)
