  • Re: Blindfold Chess - the book

Kolty played a good number of simultaneous blindfold games when he was in Europe in 1953. Unfortunately he didnt preserve names of many of the opponents. I am still trying to find more games but here is one more from the Antwerp 8 board exhibition in Belgium on March 30, 1953.
    Koltanowski - NN
    1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.0-0 Be7 5.d4 exd4 6.e5 Ne4 7.Re1 Nc5 8.Nxd4 Ne6 9.Nf5 a6 10.Nxe7 Qxe7 11.a4 b6 12.Nc3 0-0 13.Nd5 Qd8 14.Qh5 Kh8 15.Nf6 gxf6 16.Bd3 Ng5 17.Bxg5 fxg5 18.Qxh7# 1-0
The most impressive thing in this game (imo) is Kolty's decision on move 10. Impatient would have been 10.Bxe6 dxe6 11.Nxg7+ and then trying to make the position work. Kolty instead waits for further opportunities with the simple 10.Nxe7+ Qxe7 followed by the restraining a4 and further development and placing of pieces on good attacking squares.

I just heard the exciting news that GM Timur Gareev is giving a 33!! board blindfold simul at the US Championships in St Louis! Another contender (soon I hope) for the world blindfold record. In case someone has not heard of GM Timur Gareev, he is a 25 yr old super tactician, very exciting chess player, and incredible blindfold performer. He is the number two!! seed behind GM Gata Kamsky. I wish I could be there in person for that and I'd love to see the gamescores.

Well, the bus ride to St. Louis is likely a lot quicker and perhaps less eventful than it was to Texas?! :)

For sure but I'd have to have left about 6 hours ago to have any chance of seeing that blindfold simul. Apparently its tomorrow.

GM Timur Gareev scored 29 wins and 4 draws (0 losses!!) in ten hours 39 minutes at the St Louis Club yesterday. The fact that he started the simul at 9 am is even more impressive!! He plans to do 64 boards!!!!!!! at Christmastime in Hawaii. What an awesome plan. The power of the young (he's 25 and yes Im envious) to create their own success!

WoW and 28.Rxf7! Very impressive.

Gm Gareev plays a nice classical center against 1.b4 but gets caught in pawn tactics and loses a bishop. A piece down he keeps building his position and finishes with tactics against the Q and K. Usually in big blindfold exhibitions the blindfold player gets swindled so its nice to see him pull the position out from a potential loss. This book has just been published at a very reasonable price:

Der Blindschachwettkampf zwischen Jacques Mieses und Carl Schlechter in Stuttgart, 13.-15. Januar 1909 / eine Zusammenstellung der Quellen von Martin Ramsauer [The blindfold match between Jacques Mieses and Carl Schlechter in Stuttgart, 13-15 January 1909 / a compilation of the sources by Martin Ramsauer], 2013, [40] pages, cloth bound with golden letters on front cover and spine, 30 cm [Series Schach in Württemberg, 1].

At the beginning of 1909 a match of three games took place in Stuttgart between two noted experts of blindfold play. The Vienna master Carl Schlechter, official challenger of Emanuel Lasker for the world championship title, was regarded as the favourite, but surprisingly clear – with 2½ : ½ – he had to admit defeat to the Leipzig player Jacques Mieses who was more experienced in blindfold play.

The book contains all available contemporaneous articles of the local press as facsimile. Among them a longer text by Jacques Mieses about the nature of blindfold play, as well as a photograph from the match which is published here for the first time since those days. The three games are elaborately presented by all comments found.

GM Timur Gareev gave a 40 board blindfold simul a few days after the US Championships http://www.chessbase.com/Home/TabId/...ly-290513.aspx in Lindsborg Kansas at the Anatoly Karpov school there. After 3 and a half hours he took off the blindfold and completed the games sighted so not a complete blindfold simul but still impressive. Check out GM Gareev's super diet in the article above.
He still has plans to do a 64 board blindfold simul by the end of the year!
