  • driving options from Toronto to Saskatchewan

Lets say trying to leave Toronto in the late afternoon, should I try to pass Chicago, or perhaps try to make it to Sault Ste Marie? Open to any other ideas that would entail relatively safer driving past sundown in that region.

Thanks, arismarghetis at rogers dot com

just a general remark - you might save on gas in US. As for night driving - nights now are short and not very dark (especially now with the full Moon) - thus a wildlife is active. Take care.
As per time is money - did you consider a flight? :)

Aris, I recommend Toronto to the Soo, then cut across northern Michigan.

It depends what your goals are. I think Chicago is the fastest route, and I'm pretty sure the best way to North Michigan is via Sarnia. North Ontario and North Michigan are both more full of wildlife and fewer lights than an interstate so won't be as safe. But probably the drive is more pleasant. (though Marathon to Thunder Bay is a very tedious stretch of road).

Friends of mine took the ferry across Lake Michigan (Muskegon to Milwaukee). 2.5 hours - but expensive! If you take the northern Michigan route, you won't be on a divided highway for 1,000 km (when you reach Fargo ND). Our family did that route when I was a kid - the Mackinac bridge was incredible!

Thanks for all the suggestions ... it is fun figuring out new things to see vs. previous trips ... I love non-interstate

May I ask what your are going to be doing in Saskatchewan.

I hear they need a chess organizer. Are you the "one" ?

Terry, that is one of the funniest posts I have ever read here! :)

I am just planning a big drive, maybe some poker tournaments, and definitely visiting Rouleau (Dog River), SK! :)
