Starting the Day Off Right – The Wee Hours of the Morning

Well, I can’t say the day started off OK. You may wonder what I’m dong back! Early this morning, shortly after midnight, I posted my Day 1 blog, and then “quit”. My problem was using Mario’s laptop – I have almost never used one, and I found my adaptation quite slow, and there were a few little glitches happening because I kept dragging the palm of my hand over the pointer pad when typing. And we weren't sure how to disable it. I also may have been a bit tired this morning, since I had only 3 hours sleep that morning, and I just got too frustrated to continue. Anyway, I got the blog posted just before midnight, and went to bed about 1:00 AM. Mario stayed up using his laptop after I left ‘til about 1:30 AM.
So why am I back?? Read on.

    The Morning

I had made plans with Mario to call me at 8:00 AM to wake me since I hadn’t brought an alarm clock. But since I am into tournament sleeping/non-sleeping mode, I found myself awake at 5:30 AM ( 4 ½ hrs. sleep). So I got dressed, etc. and at 6:30 AM headed out to the Second Cup in the neighbourhood. They didn’t open ‘til 7:00 AM. But I got my coffee, and then came back to the air-conditioned residence reception area to wait ‘til 8:00 AM to go to my room. In the meantime saw an elderly Japanese group head out on a bus tour, and talked to a guy organizing about 50 kids to go white-water rafting. Told him I was doing something MORE exciting….a chess tournament!! LOL He got a charge out of that one – asked that I not tell his group, so he didn’t lose too many of them. Then went to my room and Mario called and we agreed to meet in the lobby @ 8:30 AM.

    Breakfast

We then headed west on Laurier toward the playing hall, and found a Timmy’s on the way for breakfast. When we were finished, another club member, also staying at the residence, came by, saw us, and joined us – Doug Gillis. Just so happens that Mario and Doug were playing in the 2nd round. Then on the way to the hall, another Torontonian, Mike Dougherty, joined us.

The Favourites and the Dark Horses

I am going to refer to the 1500’s as the Favourites, and the 1400’s as the Dark Horses (if lower-rated’s float up, I will add them to the Dark Horses).
    Favourites (1500’s):

    1.Macneil, Conrad (1598) – NS
    2.Armstrong, Robert J. (1590) – ON
    3.Ding, Jill (1585) - BC
    4.Selling, Edward (1579) – (not sure)
    5.Nguyen Quoc, Phap (1577) – VIE
    6.Nguyen Quoc, Ky (1571) - VIE
    7.Eyre, Keven (1536) – ON
    8.Lee, Melissa (1534) – ON
    9.Thomson, Bruce (1528) - ON
    10.Zhang, Jeff (1500) – ON

    “Dark Horses” (1400’s):

    11.Maurice Smith (1494) – ON
    12.Kevin Low (1484) – BC
    13.Ashley Tapp (1481) – BC
    14.Lee, Frank (1471) – ON
    15.Dhaliwal, Jatinder (1461) – ON
    16.Murray, Brian (1459) – ON

    The U 1600 Leaders & Rd. 2

After Rd. 1, the U 1600’s had two players with a point. Ashley Tapp (1481) of BC, one of my dark horses and Rinna Yu (1301), who I’ll now add to the Dark Horses. One Dark Horse get a draw, Kevin. Two favourites, Phap and Ky, and one Dark Horse, Maurice got ½ pt. byes. All the rest lost.

    Rd. 2 Punishment

For being the upstarts they were, our leaders faced some tough opposition:

    Ashley (1) – James Fu (2257)
    Rinna (1) – Jason Cao (2239)
    Kevin (1/2) – Mike Sun (2080)
Phap, Ky and Maurice (1/2) – all took another bye.

    My Rd. 2 Game

I played a line of the Benko Opening as White, that I have been experimenting with, against Brendon Lee (1870). But I made an intemperate early f4 and ended up with holes all over and a messy position. I pretty much got killed.

    Standings after 2 Rounds

    Ashley – 1
    Rinna – 1
    Phap – 1
    Ky – 1
    Maurice - 1
    Kevin – ½
    Edward – ½
    Jatinder – ½
    Zhang, Clark (994) – ½

    With 0 Points

    Favourites:

    10. Macneil, Conrad (1598) – ON
    11.Armstrong, Robert J. (1590) – ON
    12.Ding, Jill (1585) – BC
    13.Eyre, Keven (1536) – ON
    14.Lee, Melissa (1534) – ON
    15.Thomson, Bruce (1528) – ON
    16.Zhang, Jeff (1500) – ON

    “Dark Horses”

    17.Lee, Frank (1471) – ON
    18.Murray, Brian (1459) – ON

    Lunch

Mario and I finished about 12:30 PM. For a while, I analyzed our game with my opponent, Brendon Lee – very pleasant young guy, attending university – and somewhat ahead of me on his calculations! Then Mario and I went to a local Shwarma place for lunch. It was here that Mario tried to encourage me to keep doing my blog. Though he said he did like to use his computer after the round late at night, and get his games analyzed over night, he said it would be no problem to give it to me in the morning, and I could do the day-before blog then and post it. He also suggested that I try to see if the residence reception had an extra normal keyboard I could use with the laptop, to cut down the frustration. And I could go back to the residence for the afternoon and do the first half of today’s blog, to get part done today. He would just go back and watch the remaining Rd. 2 games.

So for those of you who thought you were rid of me, you can blame Mario. I returned to the residence, but no extra keyboard at reception. So, I decided to try the laptop again, and see if I could handle it better, when a bit less tired. It wasn’t quite as bad, though still very slow. But I persisted and did get this first half done.

Rd. 3 Pairings for the Leaders

    Dydak Mateusz (1975) vs Ashley
    Amos Kuttner (1946) vs Rinna
    Edward vs Jacob Krolczyk (1909)
    Jeffrey Xu (1862) vs Jatinder
    Kevin vs Guy Piche (1745)
    Clark vs Konstantin Vlasenko (1660)
Phap, Ky and Maurice took their third byes.

    Back to the Hall

When I finished the first part of this blog in the afternoon, I then went for a little walk in a near-by park, and then headed for the hall for Rd. 3. I was playing up for the third time (which is fine with me!) – Saeid Sadeghi (1978).

    Leaders After 3 Rounds

    1 ½ /3

    Nguyen Quoc, Phat (1577) – 3 byes - Favourite
    Nguyen Quoc, Ky (1571) - 3 byes - Favourite
    Smith, Maurice (1494) – 3 byes – Dark Horse

Here are the other Favourites (1500's):

    1. Macneil, Conrad (1598) – NS – 0/2
    2. Armstrong, Robert J. (1590) – ON -0/2
    3. Ding, Jill (1585) – BC - 0/2
    4. Selling, Edward (1579) – (not sure of Prov.) - ½ /2
    5. Eyre, Keven (1536) – ON - 0/2
    6. Lee, Melissa (1534) – ON - 0/2
    7. Thomson, Bruce (1528) – ON – 0/2
    8. Zhang, Jeff (1500) – ON – 0/2

Here are the other Dark Horses (1400's):

    9. . Low, Kevin – 1484 – BC - ½ /2
    10. Tapp, Ashley – 1481 – BC - 1/2
    11. Lee, Frank – 1471 – ON - 0/2
    13. Dhaliwal, Jatinder – 1461 – ON - ½ /2
    14. Murray, Brian – 1459 – ON – May have withdrawn – not sure yet.- 0/1
    15. Yu, Rhinna (1301) – (not sure of Prov.) - Dark Horse – 1 /2.
    16. Zhang, Clark (1105) – (not sure of Prov.) – Dark Horse - ½ /2

    Miscalculation

Mario and I had both finished Rd. 2 around 11:00 PM or a bit earlier, and were chatting in the foyer to the second playing hall (the top boards were in another room). I said I needed to go check something on the wall chart outside. When I came back, Mario was not there! I looked in the playing hall – one game going still, but no Mario. Checked the hotel lobby – not there. Even checked the bathroom – nope. I had seen someone go into the top board's playing hall, and then come out, so I assumed no games still going on there. And since I couldn't find him, I decided he had maybe gone out with someone, or had headed back to the residence thinking I had left.
Nope – wrong about the top boards playing hall – one game left – and in it was NM Geordie Derraugh, who had driven up to Ottawa from Toronto with us. He was playing a GM, and down K + R vs K + N. Mario was watching it! Geordie drew – congrads! Mario, after, looked for me, and decided I had gone home, which I had. So he returned to the residence about midnight.

Rd. 3 Pairings for 3 Leaders

All 3 were taking a third bye.

    Conclusion

A very efficient and enjoyable second day of the 2013 Canadian Open. Though using the laptop is still slow, if Mario can put up with me, I'll try it again tomorrow.

I hope you enjoy my musings and fact reporting over the course of this Canadian Open. It will help to make this blog even more interesting if viewers post their responses, facts they may know, their own stories, in response to my daily material. I hope to hear from many of you as the week passes! I will try to respond whenever it seems appropriate.
    15. Yu, Rhinna (1301) – (not sure of Prov.) - Dark Horse – 1 /2.

don't know. Though it should be possible to make it green too.

Unfortunately, this blogger Neanderthal does not own a laptop. So for future blogs, I am hoping that the Ottawa U residence where I am staying, has a computer common room to which I can have access. I did stay at one of these residences for the 2007 CO in Ottawa, but I can’t quite remember if that is what I did (sigh – the over 65 phenomena). If not, then I may have to find a convenient cyber café, if I am serious about still continuing this project!

Great to see you back into action again ,Bob. I thought you would wander to a library or all night Internet cafe. But humans adapt well. I couldn't type a word on my phone when I first got it, now I can comfortably text; I used to play 1. d4, but now 1. e4. You'll get used to the laptop, especially if you buy a USB keyboard/mouse.

I have realized now that I do have 3 corrections to make to my blog. I had said there were only three co-leaders of the U 1600, with 1 1/2 /3. But there are 6!!

Two of them I did mention under Dark Horses after 3 rounds. And showed them with 1 1/2 /3, but did not give them credit of being co-leaders. They are Rinna Yu (1301) who in Rd.4 played Ian Finlay (1936). Also Clark Zhang (994), who in Rd. 4 played Roger Lebrun (1914). The third one I missed because I had surmised he had withdrawn, because I couldn't find him on the charts after Rd.2. He is Brian Murray (1459), and in Rd. 4, he played Amos Kuttner (1946). Sorry to all three of you for not giving you your just due!

                      Day 3/Rd. 4 – Mon., July 15 (Blog # 5): 2013 Canadian Open U 1600 Blog.

                      Day 3/Rd. 4 – Mon., July 15 (Blog # 5)

                      U 1600 6 Co-Leaders' Rd. 4 Pairings

                      1 ½ /3 Points

Maurice Smith (1494) – vs Gordon Giacomin (1951)
Brian Murray (1459) – vs Amos Kuttner (1946)
Rinna Yu (1301) – vs Ian Finlay (1936)
Clark Zhang (994) - vs Roger Lebrun (1914)
Phat Nguyen Quoc (1775) – taking a fourth bye
Ky Nguyen Quoc (1775) – taking a fourth bye

The Wee Hours of the Morning

I got home from Rd.3 just after midnight. And I was tired (age? 2 rounds in a day?). So I went to bed – haven’t gone to bed that early for ages. Of course, I woke up at 3:00 AM – tournament non-sleep mode. I said this is ridiculous, even for me – and so I lay there, and lo and behold, I went to sleep again ‘til 6:00 AM – 6 hrs is great!

                      Late Morning

So I got up, etc., and headed out again to my favourite, local Second Cup – they open at 6:30 AM. Coffee and croissant out on the patio hit the spot. But I was not alone – sparrows! Then I remembered from the CO in 2007 in Ottawa, when I had stayed at the same U of Ottawa residence. The sparrows have no fear – they are used to being fed, and come and land on the table, and hop right up in front of you. So they and I shared my croissant – they take the pieces right out of your hand.
Then I headed back to the residence, to make a few notes for today’s blog. Mario and I had made plans to go to breakfast together this morning, but had been sketchy on details, especially since we got separated last night after round 2 and returned to the residence separately. But at 8:00 AM, Mario called and we agreed to meet in the nice air-conditioned residence lobby – though a single room is dirt cheap ($ 25/night), it is not air-conditioned (sigh).
From 2007, I thought I remembered some breakfast places south on Elgin, and sure enough we found the $ 5.00 breakfast – good memory……sometimes!
Then we returned for me to use Mario’s computer to finish and post Monday's blog. He first showed me how ChessBase’s “Cloud” for analysis works – quite neat.
Then he went to the floor’s lounge, which was cooler than the room, to do some “chess training”. I finished and posted the July 14 blog, and typed up the first half of this blog (July 15). When Mario returned, he had to admit he had instead done “rejuvenation training”, what we pedestrian types would call just “sleeping”!

                      The Afternoon

Mario and I then arranged to go for an early dinner at 3:00 PM (Mario has always preferred not to eat a heavy meal just before a round – scientifically sound from what I know). I was actually a bit tired, so I went for a nap (despite my low sleep hours generally, an afternoon nap is still somewhat rare for me). Mario then promised, as my sole student!!LOL, that he would actually study, not “rejuvenate".
I slept for a little less than an hour. Then I phoned my wife at our Meaford country home (a kind of semi-farm/swamp). When I take my annual chess holiday, my wife hightails it from our Toronto home to the farm. It seemed to be hotter there, with the humidity next to Georgian Bay, than in Ottawa. She had had one of her sister's dogs (the sister lives in Meaford), Annie, a beautiful golden retriver, over for a sleepover for 2 days – she adores Annie. Then on Wednesday, she switches Annie for her Markham sister's dog, a snoodle, Maddy, whom she has 'til Sunday. She also very subtly reminded me that I should of course call her tomorrow as well.........her birthday!! (which always occurs during a Canadian Open).
Then at 3:00PM Mario and I went for an early dinner (he swore up and down he'd been studying, not rejuvenating)! The Tai place we had picked was closed! The first sushi place was closed. The second sushi place was closed. Of course, we were right between lunch and dinner. The third sushi place was open and had a nice $13 special. Then we went to the playing hall.

                      The Kibitzer is King

Since we were early, we decided to go to the skittles room and look at each other's games. Well, at a Canadian Open, you don't do this alone. As soon as we sat down, a young junior joined us on the chair to the right (sorry, don't know your name). Beside Mario sat a young expert whom I later found out was Dunne (sorry, but don't know the first name). Then junior expert Mark Plotkin joined us, and then someone from the U 1600 group, Jatinder Dhaliwal. Former World U 10 youth champion, Jason Cao, came in and out. We all had a great time looking at David Itkin's game against me and his amazing Rd. 1 R for P sac-attack, and how many ways I might have been mated. I did survive to lose the ending a P down. Along the way, Mark and I got into a great theoretical discussion on whether CFC's new rating bonus point formula was inflationary! You just never know what will happen in Kibitzing. In chess, definitely the kibitzer is king!!
About a half hour before the round, I went out to the lobby to relax and socialize before the round – chatted with our Scarborough CC President Maurice Smith, 2007 Ottawa Can. Open organizer, Gord Ritchie, former Can. Seniors' Champ, Bill Doubleday, Willowdale CC member, DmitryChernik, who had just last round defeat much higher rated Robert Hamilton, and some others.

                      U 1600 Leaders after 4 Rounds

                      2/4 Points

                      1st/3rd - Maurice Smith (1994); Phat Nguyen Quoc (1775) – 4 byes; Ky Nguyen Quoc ( 1771) - 4 byes

                      1 ½ /4 Points

                      4th/9th – 6 players (I'll list them below re Rd. 5 pairings)

Here’s how the others are doing that we are following:

                      Favourites (1500’s):

                      1.Macneil, Conrad (1598) – NS - 1
                      2.Armstrong, Robert J. (1590) – ON - ½
                      3.Ding, Jill (1585) – BC - 1
                      4.Eyre, Keven (1536) – ON - 0
                      5.Thomson, Bruce (1528) – ON - 0
                      6.Zhang, Jeff (1500) – ON - ½

We're not doing all that impressive, are we??

                      “Dark Horses” (1400’s):

                      9. Kevin Low (1484) – BC - ½
                      10. Ashley Tapp (1481) – BC - 1
                      11.Lee, Frank (1471) – ON - 1

                      My Rd. 4 Game

I played a young (U 10 I'd say) girl from BC., Annika Zhou (1045 ) on the second last board! She played quite decently, but I outplayed her and was up a centre P at the mid-point, and she was already down to around 5 min.. Then I sort of lost the thread, and she started playing on the increment, between 1 min. and less than a minute...better than she had in slow chess! Up a P, I ended up almost in zugzwang. With 13 seconds on her clock, down a P, with big eyes open with expectation, she OFFERED ME A DRAW!! Could she possibly escape? What could I do?? It was a long haul to win it, and maybe it might be a draw anyway, only up a P (Houdini says I have a slight advantage only), my active possible plan looked losing, and she had played a good game and well above her rating. Seem like a good time to accept the draw. Annika seemed quite pleased.

                      After Rd. 4

Mario and I headed back to the residence, but were a bit hungry, so we stopped in at the chessplayers' favourite McD's, and then headed back to the Ottawa U residence.

Anika is U12 and Neil is U8 ... BC kids... they are way "over -rated" :-)

Love your blog! This definitely shines a light on a section that normally doesn't receive it! By the way, for some reason I'm not listed on this but my score is 2.0/4.0 based on 3 byes and a draw with a player ranked 1936.

                              Hi Miles:

I had been focussing on the 1500's and 1400's, and for below that, tried to notice if someone floated to the top. Sorry I somehow missed you. You are now added to my list of "Dark Horses". Of course, the added spotlight puts great pressure on you now, which before you had avoided! Good luck.

                                Hi Bob,

Looks like you're getting some exposure to the young BC contingent! That's one of the attractions of the CO, getting to play different people from all over the country- although, if I were there I'm certain we would end up paired at some point:)
