  • Supplemental contribution on Albert Boxer (1920-2005)

Way back in 2008, when I was still living in Winnipeg, I wrote a short piece about Albert and included some photos. The title of the piece is "Der Alter Goniff" which means "the old swindler" (in Yiddish). And I'm reminded that no one yet has taken up my idea of having a chess award for the best chess swindle.

The Albert Boxer Tournament and Der Alter Goniff
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

      Yes. That's the book.

I don't know Yiddish well enough to comment on that translation for the term. I'd translate it differently.

There was a lot of chess back then. Also, the Winnipeg Jewish Club and the other Winnipeg club shared the same playing space. It was one big club with each looking after their own members as I recall it. I don't know when things changed. And, I could be wrong on that.
