  • Mixed section at CYCC - question

    Hello,

Just a question for the chess community regarding mixed section.

    Case A
Let's imagine that same age Open section players was mixed with girls section because are just 2 girls in that age group.
After all the rounds are played: Girl#1 won her match against Girl#2, but in the end she has less number of points then Girl #2.
Who is the winner of the girls section?

    Case B
Two age groups are mixed together because are just 2 girls in one of the section.
After all the rounds are played: Girl#1 won her match against Girl#2, but in the end she has less number of points then Girl #2.
Who is the winner of that girls section?

And of course, during the registration, every player is register just to one section not both, and of course they can win just the section they registered for. You can replace the numbers of girls from 2 to 4 if you like to have a real example.

    Thanks

    Andrei

Re : Mixed section at CYCC - question

In Quebec we usually only have mixed sections, as young girls are pretty much as strong as boys (often even stronger!). We do offer a prize for the best girl, but we only look at the result, not her games against the other girls. It's pretty much the same as for the ''best junior prize'' of an open tournament. We look at the final result, not at the games between the junior players. After all, what would be the point of their other games if they don't count?
A single game would not be enough to really determine who's stronger, so the overall result is more representative. For only two girls though (not three), a match would be the best solution. For four girls, a double round robin would be perfect.

Obviously, this is the kind of things that the organizers should state before the start of the tournament.

If there are only 2 players in the section, why not have them play a 6 game match (or however rounds there happen to be) to see who will win the prize of going to the WYCC? It might not be as much fun as a larger section but it does determine a winner in the group.

      So simple is chess.

I think someone suggested that idea of a six game match and a double round robin for the under 18 girls. The problem is that the handbook suggests something different.

At one time the Canadian Junior champion was the junior with the highest score at the Canadian Open. Even if he didn't play many other juniors. That was changed. In a way it was like comparing apples and oranges.

A CYCC should also require an IA and that should be in the handbook.
