  • Quebec Open : First upset

I'll cover the Quebec Open every day this week. I wanted to wait until the round is over to give the first comments, but this upset deserved to be mentionned.

With 49 minutes on his clock, GM Kovalyov, who is probably the most solid GM in Canada, made a horrible blunder... I guess it shows how it can happen to anyone :)

    Black played Rc8-d8?? and resigned.

There's no doubt that GM Kovalyov will be able to recover from this loss.

I don't think a "blunder" is the correct term... I was about to play Rc7 but for some reason my hand moved the rook to d8. Not sure how to call that...

The phrase you're looking for is Fingerfehler.

        Thanks. I learned a new word :)

        Other upsets :
        1 1 GM Bruzon Batista Lazaro 2689 0 ½ - ½ 0 Adithya B. 2301 28
        3 3 GM Rozentalis Eduardas 2619 0 ½ - ½ 0 FM Rodriguez Eric 2290 30
        7 7 GM Sambuev Bator 2530 0 0 - 1 0 Preotu Razvan 2277 34
        9 9 GM Arencibia Walter 2526 0 ½ - ½ 0 FM Hamilton Robert 2251 36

Also, A WIM from Mongolia didn't show up (apparently she warned the organizers of the CO but not us :( ), so the best woman of the CO will replace her : Qiyu Zhou.

AFAIK the WIM cancelled because of a sudden illness in her family. From what I know, it wouldn't be surprising if she wasn't communicating with anyone but family members right now.

Good decision to put in Qiyu in as her replacement.
Being U14 and FIDE's 5th ranked woman is already some reason to put her in the top group; and as Top Woman at the CO this week, it looks like she's in form.

          good luck with the COQ.
