Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. 2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. 8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.

9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
If we had one tenth of the population then all of us could have ten times the carbon footprint on average and we would have the same total as we do now. It seems to me that part of a reasonably strategy to combat climate change would be to seek to intelligently and voluntarily reduce the population.
Even the worstest of the worstest heinous carbon polluters ... China ... ended its one child policy. China upped the number to allow for 3 children per family. China's current population is around 1.4 billion ... China accounts for about 30% of the world's global emissions.
The global economy needs workers or it will implode on itself. Who gets left behind when this occurs? Bob A and the millions who are either too old or those who are in failing health.
Stop breeding is not a intelligent solution.
Holding China accountable IS the largest part of the solution ... and also holding all those who continue to import their products from China.

It is definitely a complicated problem........but we have no choice........we must not only figure it out, but solve it well before the "Tipping Point", around Jan. 1, 2031.
I believe, Grandmasterov, that there is faulty premise in your argument. You overestimate the capacity of humans to sacrifice luxuries once they have experienced them. We have proven as a species that we will not give up what we have, planes, travel, cars, lavish accommodations, eating dead animals... Now, we live on a planet that does not grow with us, and that will sooner or later run out of renewable resources UNLESS we restrict our numbers.
I repeat, a PART of the solution to climate change should be INTELLIGENT AND VOLUNTARY population reduction. Look at it this way, the fewer people we have the higher off the hog will each of us be able to live without jeopardizing the ecosystem. I am not suggesting that we all give up sex.
But this is all moot, the world is about to end. Have fun while you can and hope that a miracle takes place. We are clearly not going to save ourselves, we need help.
Minuscule steps re fighting climate change are creating losers, who aren't happy. It is seeming that a slower transition is needed for them, but there is no time.
But radical steps are needed.....immediately. There will be lots of losers. The blow-back will be fierce.
On the other hand, I mostly agree with this article. We will be facing a challenging future of dramatic and possibly catastrophic climate change.
We were given ample warnings over the past few decades from some great environmentalists: David Suzuki, Naomi Klein, Al Gore, David Attenborough, Rachel Carson, George Monbiot, Jane Goodall, James Hansen, Naomi Oreskes, to name a few, but insufficient action was taken to prevent the arrival of climate change. It is here now, and many still struggle to even acknowledge that fact.
Dilip has commented that global climate related deaths have dropped over the past 50 years, but that is due to our ability to better predict violent climate activity, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, etc. and get people out of harm’s way. Deaths are higher than they needed to be due to climate change. It will continue to worsen.
We need a globally coordinated systematic effort to combat climate change. The sooner the better, but it won’t start tomorrow. Maybe we will get one step closer if the Republicans get clobbered in the midterms in October, or when Putin runs out of troops, or when Bolsonaro stops chopping down the Brazilian rainforest, or when our leaders value life over money.
When will that day come? I don’t know. I am optimistic that that day will come eventually. I hope to live long enough to see it. It would be a real buzz kill leaving this earth knowing the humans weren’t even trying to survive.
ChessTalk has moved from having an inclusive "Open Forum - both chess and non-chess" to having two Closed English Fora - One, the homepage of which comes up by default when you come to the ChessTalk website, being "ONLY" for chess items, and this second one, being ONLY for "Non-Chess" topics.
I, as originator of this thread, would be interested in getting chessplayers' responses to the new re-structuring of ChessTalk.
Will it downgrade significantly the discussion among chessplayers on the most important issue facing the world today: Climate Change?
Do you believe ordinary chessplayers, who do have a passing interest in the topic, and who come to the CT homepage, will come to this forum?
Do you think, given the current set-up of the CT Homepage (Being the Closed Chess-Only forum), that general CT viewers will even know that this forum exists??

Activity last week Continued to go through the roof compared to the most recent prior period, which itself was a big jump from the then status quo. Activity is clearly dependent on new responses, and last week there were 4 responses per day, as there were the prior week! Accordingly the views skyrocketed to more than the yearly average so far this year, and more than the prior week!

This thread encourages CT'ers to re-post responses here when they see climate change posts of interest elsewhere.
I personally, as the thread originator, am shooting to post a new response at least every 2nd day, but am sometimes even falling short on this, depending on the amount of time I have to be on-line, which is limited.
The Pressing Climate Change Issue
The core issue:
Building a sense of URGENCY on this issue in society. We must realize that we cannot kick it down the road any longer!
The public is aware of the climate change issue.......
BUT.....
climate activists must find strategies to “AWAKEN” the public to the “urgency”.
The Time Line
Nature's Tipping point is estimated to be, on current trajectory, only 9 years away (Around Jan. 1, 2031). Capping the temperature rise at only 1.5 degrees Celsius is now impossible (UN Climate Change Panel's most recent report). UNCCP noted that current government deadlines were totally insufficient to solve the problem. CO 2 must be capped by 2025! And for the first time, CO 2 “removal” has now become a necessary part of the solution, along with eliminating spewing of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
Our window of opportunity is fast closing.
The Large Picture Solutions
Can we come up with at least one or two viable suggestions of impressive, radical things that might wake up the public, that we could then put out there to other concerned client activists?

I don't believe in banning people based on their views, you should instead be happy to debate them with logic and reason and evidence where possible.
But I do understand that it is increasingly difficult to know what is real and what is fake.
Bob G., have you heard of James Beacham? He's an astrophysicist who is working at CERN and helped discover the Higgs Boson in 2012. Ok, there's more than one thing to respond to here.
First, I had not heard the phrase 'fear porn" before. Interesting, but also kind of inflammatory. I mean, just call it fake news if that's what you think it is. As they say on The Simpsons, "don't have a cow, man!"
Second, I wasn't making any points about sea levels. So yeah, the ice sheets around Antarctica that break off and melt, that isn't going to increase sea level, because the ice was sitting in the water already. What's been happening very recently is the melting of the ice sheets that lie on top of LAND -- specifically, Greenland. That is a new and very recent event, and so that could very well increase sea level. But i repeat, I was not saying anything about sea level.
My point was about CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere. Are you actually saying that increasing CO2 levels globally will NOT increase average global temperatures? You seemed to be calling that idea bullshit, yet there is so much science and observations supporting it.
So are you calling the entire concept of the so-called "greenhouse effect" of CO2 and methane .... bullshit? That's my big question to you.
Ok, I get it about the alleged depopulationists like Bill Gates and apparently many more, a friend has helped bring me up to speed recently on all of that. I don't know ... it's a lot to take in, not the least of which argues for a global cabal that has all the world's leaders cooperating behind the scenes to bring the world to a standstill even while appearing to be trying to keep the world economies growing.
I did like that you brought up some months ago the point about the vaccines, that they are going to eventually clog up everyone's capillaries with excess spike proteins and cause much illness and death of the vaccinated from oxygen deprivation (basically, I am pretty sure that was your argument). There has been increasing evidence of vaccinated athletes suffering sudden deaths, and I do believe that is where such an effect would first appear. So I am continuing to keep a close eye on that aspect of the vaccines.
With respect to climate change overall, I do believe that the solution proposals that will be coming out over the next decade or so will make the cure seem worse than the disease, for TODAY'S generation. The argument will be that we, that is today's generation, MUST take dramatic and almost masochistic steps to save the future of mankind. I have been describing recently that I don't see that kind of argument going over very well, for the simple reason that people don't want and won't want to take such steps on the POSSIBILITY that they are necessary.
But at the same time, it appears that more and more people are being won over to such arguments. The reason? They are caught up in unprecedented catastrophes -- wildfires, droughts, monsoons and flooding, temperature extremes. Eventually if these catastrophes become endemic and truly global, a sea change in attitudes will likely occur.
Either way, a lot of people have to perish it seems. Whether that's the work of depopulationists or good old, bad old Mother Nature ... a vast reduction of population does seem not just necessary but quite predictable.
