General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
With the World Cup of Soccer to begin within days, it's time for some predictions!
1) Canada will score at least one goal in its three games, facing Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. In 1986, the last time Canada qualified, it was shut out in all three matches. However, Canada will not advance to the knockout phases.
2) FIFA will continue to downplay international efforts for it to compensate the thousands of 'guest workers', who suffered enormously while constructing the facilities for the event. Many fatalities and injuries have occurred there, during the past several years. FIFA, reaping vast profits from the event, will reach a new low in public relations. I liked Bruce Arthur's comment, writing recently in the Toronto Star: 'Corruption should be a presenting sponsor for the 2022 World Cup.'
3) No one will be able to drink alcohol legally in Qatar, during the tournament. Various schemes to get around this restriction will no doubt be attempted. Hopefully, we will avoid any executions in Qatar, for drinking illegal alcohol.
Oh yes, Canada scored a beautiful goal against Croatia in the opening minutes of the match. But then things didn't go according to plan... Or rather, the Croatian plan :)
Canada expended tremendous effort at the 2022 World Cup. Their inexperience against top teams eventually showed, to their detriment. We got another goal today against Morocco, and that match was very competitive, against the eventual group winner. We have much to be proud of; qualifying top of our group as we did, to get to Qatar, was very impressive. Lack of sharpness in finishing the many chances we generated at Qatar was the difference. Canada has the players to do much better in 2026, when we will be a co-host in an expanded tournament of 48 players, up from 32.
FIFA is now investigating the Croatian fans' jeering during thqt match of our goalkeeper, who has Serbian heritage; Croatia and Serbia don't get along too well. Canada showed very disrespectful manners when its coach behaved badly prior to the Croatia match.
Belgium and Germany both failed to advance past the group stage at Qatar 2022. Not too many people expected that.
And I think Canada gets a small slice of vindication for its weaker-than-expected performance in Qatar, after seeing both Croatia and Morocco reach the semi-finals from Canada's group!!
Watching the Netherlands vs Argentina match yesterday, I thought the referee was favoring Argentina. Lionel Messi, in particular, got away with a lot, including a number of 'dives', and at least one deliberate hand-ball near midfield, uncalled. What was the referee looking at? Had Messi been sent off, Argentina would have struggled, since their schemes revolve around him in major ways. Argentina's penalty was highly dubious, in my view. Argentina found a way to win, with its goalkeeper splendid in the penalty shoot-out. It was, however, one of the most exciting matches I have ever seen. I was quite disgusted by the high number of fouls from both teams.
My prediction that Brazil would win was shot down by Croatia. I suspect I am not the only one to lose a few dollars on bets!

I've tried watching some World Cup action .... it's so boring when you are used to hockey.
I was watching England vs France. So right at the start of the game, France advanced into the England side, Then suddenly an England player got the ball and he did something very mysterious to me ... he kicked the ball out of the field on the side, where there was nobody at all. It went out of bounds and a France player got to throw the ball in. What does he do? He throws it to the England goalie!
Is this some strange rule I don't know about? I had to stop watching about 10 minutes after that, it was just too pathetic.
I HAVE AN IDEA TO BRING MORE EXCITEMENT TO SOCCER (or if you prefer FOOTBALL):
At each end, instead of just one net, there are 3 nets, all spaced equally along the back line, each the same size as the current net. Now when the ball is along either side, there are way more options that the defense has to handle. A goal can be scored in any one of the 3 nets (and obviously, there are 3 goaltenders per team).
When there is to be a corner kick, only the middle net is eligible for scoring, so the corner kick has to go somewhere in front of that net. But once the ball has been touched in the center area, all 3 nets become eligible for scoring.
Scores would go much higher in this version. I don't think the scores would go as high as lacrosse though.
This could be called Trinity Soccer or Trinity Football.
