General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I just had a thought about how to stop all the BS emails and phone calls.
Are you tired of calls to clean your air ducts?
Tired of winning millions of dollars from estates of corrupt Nigerian government officials?
etc, etc, etc, etc.
I say make them pay for their harassment and attacks on our mental health.
The plan is to tax all phone calls and emails. A small fee, maybe $0.01 per thousand.
All the phone companies and internet providers are required to collect the tax and remit to the government.
The government in turn pays out 100% back to the citizens.

What do you think?
I think you might need a new email address. How long have you had your current ewmal? What is the domain?
My billionaire wealth tax proposal is one tax that perhaps maybe Fred would support.
To recap:
This is a new tax, above and beyond any other taxes.
The tax base is wealth, not income.
Each year, you calculate your wealth.
Wealth equal fair market value of all your assets, less fair market value of all your debts.
Wealth tax rate = 0% on the first $1 billion, 100% on wealth above $1 billion.
So unless Fred is a billionaire, his tax bill will be zero.
Only the rich pay, and they are still rich afterwards. Win win as they say.
Fred is not a billionaire! Assuming that this thread has not yet descended into the lunatic zones of other threads on here, I'm sure that you know well that there are many accountants/lawyers who would ensure that wealth was always less than a billion. IMO your proposal is a non-starter....

Thank you Fred. I totally agree. I assure you, I am not a crazy person. I don't expect my proposal will ever be implemented.
My billionaire wealth tax proposal is really just a concept idea. I hope to introduce the idea of a ceiling on personal wealth. Maybe acceptance of that idea would move us towards a more progressive tax system. I believe the huge wealth/income gap contributes to many other problems.

The unrealistic income gap we see all around is because corrupt governments (including the socialist and communist ones...remember Russia also has oligarchs...), to whom some of us don't mind giving a lot of power, make stupid laws which enable some, with devious help from banks, lawyers and accountants, to become insanely wealthy... The answer lies in getting rid of such corrupt laws, not in stealing money by direct taxation...

Dilip, I think you are guilty of circular logic. You think you can drastically reduce the wealth gap by eliminating "stupid" "corrupt" laws.
The problem is, some entity must decide what laws QUALIFY as being "stupid" or "corrupt".
The entity that makes this decision is itself eventually going to become "stupid" and / or "corrupt" (if it isn't already that right off the bat).
You cannot eliminate human nature. Surely you've read the story of the frog and the scorpion.
The true path to enlightenment is to realize that everything goes in cycles. The United States started off with the idea that all men (they left out women) are created equal and everyone is entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as a protest against the rule of the British government. Now the American government, no matter which party controls the White House, the Congress and the Senate, is de facto the same as was the British system it protested against. If a group of humans populated Mars, it would start of idealistically trying to avoid becoming the United States system, and after 200 years it would be de facto the United States system.
Mr. Gillanders is also guilty of avoiding the inevitability of human greed. Taxing away individual wealth beyond some arbitrary level would only make the government the holder of all the wealth. The government would be the 1%.
Take real estate as an example. Much of a typical multi-billionaire's wealth is in real estate. If the typical multi-billionaire had to hand over to the government ownership of real estate, who would own the real estate? The government. Who would live in the palatial estates? Elite members of the government.
SOMEBODY has to own and enjoy all the palaces, all the yachts, all the private jets, etc.
