General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I also notice they are looking for a representative of the Canadian Correspondence Chess Association. If that's not filled and nobody else wants it, I'll take it. I'm a CCCA life member. How's that for filling positions?
Gary
Now wouldn't that be putting the fox among the chickens!!
I'll pass on your generous offer to the powers that be!
But I think that you need first to get authorized by the CCCA.
I was recently told, in an email from another organizer, that I was too old and past it and it was time to think about retiring. You want more recognition than that??
OMFG. John, I can't even think about Windsor and chess without thinking of your name too. You've been a tireless volunteer. If you "retire", who would do the work? And I *know* there's a lot of work.
[QUOTE=Gary Ruben;74211]The CCCA will have to verify it anyhow so why not just ask them if they can have me. QUOTE]
Hi Gary:
Nope as far as I know.
It is CCCA's obligation to let CFC know who they are appointing as their CFC Governor rep.. It is an internal matter to CCCA. So if you would like to be CCCA rep., you will have to, as far as I know, approach CCCA yourself, and make the offer.
If a volunteer isn't doing the work in a timely manner why doesn't he simply step aside. Being a volunteer is no excuse for not doing a job in a timely manner. After all, taking a volunteer position is assuming a responsibility.
Absolutely agree!
Just wondering, Gary - what could you say about OCA President Christopher Mallon?
He is not only not doing his work in a timely manner, but even doesn't respond to questions asked by OCA Governors!
I guess, I have already exhausted all available ways to convince him to do his work, and ChessTalk is my last resort... :(

I don't understand that reasoning. If a volunteer isn't doing the work in a timely manner why doesn't he simply step aside. Being a volunteer is no excuse for not doing a job in a timely manner. After all, taking a volunteer position is assuming a responsibility.
Hi Gary: I agree with you only IF you have a volunteer replacement. In some cases it is better to have a volunteer job being done shoddily, than not at all by anyone.
I need about 75 volunteers to run my big annual chess tournament. I've been very lucky, all my volunteers have been super, I'd be hard put to think of even one volunteer who has been less than diligent.
Some thoughts:
the first requirement for a volunteer is willingness.
"volunteer" is a pay category, not a job description
volunteers should have a job description
volunteers should know what support they have if they run into difficulties
As has been said, it's pretty hard to put pressure on a volunteer... he can quit, and then you lose his services altogether. I have an ongoing annual adventure with one fellow, a very nice guy, who has run the online registration for at least 10 years. Every single year he delays and delays, usually getting the system up-and-running about five minutes before the deadline. But he always gets it done. It's become (almost) a joke between us.
In the case of the CFC website, it is not clear to me (and I suspect, not clear to anyone), who is supposed to update the various parts of the site, what their respective job descriptions are, and who the supervisor/support person is.

Hi John:
PEI CFC Governor, Fred McKim, and CFC Treasurer, handled the new website file as a separate responsibility, along with his other volunteer jobs. Since the website has been up and running, he is the one I have contacted re anything to do with the website, and he has always responded.
Whether he has now taken on the file for website updating, in addition to his other roles, I am not sure (but I believe so).
He is likely the best one to now enter this discussion of members about how to get the new website content completely up-to-date.
I will now forward this post to Fred, for his information.
