He was very well regarded as a councilor and was frequently a useful voice of reason on city council. He over-reached in trying to be mayor, and it was well past time for "Ford Nation" to go by 2014, but this is still very sad news. He leaves behind a wife and children.

    P.S. It will be interesting to see what Jimmy Kimmel says tonight.
    I would be surprised if it gets a mention - it(he) isn't news anymore to the late night talk crowd...

      Rest In Peace, Rob Ford, 1969-2016.

      Hopefully, he will wind up being a one-of-a-kind politician.

      Primary lesson to be learned:
      There are, in fact, consequences for being a serial abuser of illegal drugs and alcohol, and for repeatedly bullying many other people.

        So the logical consequences of the behaviour you mention are to be stricken with a rare and aggressive form of cancer? So saeth Frank the scientist. Amen.

            I'm guessing that colon cancer relates more to diet and obeisity than to substance abuse. I don't know if you meant to connect Ford's bullying with his death, but it sorta reads that way. Obviously, being a bully doesn't cause cancer (though I will admit that mental illness can have physical consequences). Colon cancer is a nasty death and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

            You might be interested to read the comment by feminist Meghan Murphy who wrote a piece about how difficult it was to muster an ounce of sadness over the death of another abusive person.

                This is ChessTalk Francis, but even still, I agree with you. There is no need to beat the poor guy up. He had some personal demons that were pretty formidable but he personally helped many hundreds of people when he was a city Councillor (including when he was mayor) and a lot of that help is being recalled now. I don't think I would have voted for him if I had been a resident of Toronto, but he did what he said he would do and he spent the taxpayer money far more carefully than he spent his own money! That is a legacy.

                  Once we cut away the Toronto Sun-generated cult worship of former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, we have a chance to get to the heart of the matter.

                  The reality is that Rob Ford was born into an exceptionally privileged family, with a father, Doug Ford Sr., who was a multi-millionaire businessman and a Progressive Conservative MPP at Queen's Park. Rob wanted for nothing while growing up, and had an opportunity for an extraordinarily productive life. Many who were born in much humbler circumstances have gone on to overcome their challenges and contribute much more to society than Rob Ford did; he squandered most of his potential, and turned himself into a laughingstock, the butt of international jokes, while doing so.

                  Media and book coverage of Rob Ford during his term as Mayor has included:
                  a) his admission of crack cocaine use, when the evidence could no longer be denied or covered up;
                  b) snippets of information concerning his spousal abuse;
                  c) multiple out-of-control alcoholic binges in public settings;
                  d) several instances of abusive behaviour towards members of his staff, other City Councillors, and members of the public;
                  e) many violations of municipal governance rules;
                  f) one incident where he commandeered and redirected an in-service Toronto Transit bus to deliver members of the high school football team he coached;
                  g) claimed credit for accomplishments of others, and exaggerated his own achievements.

                  Did his lifestyle management contribute to his early death from cancer? I would have to think so.

                    It is refreshing to see that there is at least one honest citizen who actually believes that the Ford administration practiced austerity. The numbers say something quite different.

                        No, the heart of the matter is that a man with a wife and children has just died and you, who live in Kingston and presumably have never had anything to do with the man, are choosing to pass judgment upon him and to dance on his grave before he's even in it.

                        Shame on you.

                            VERY well posted Francis. Frank, I join Steve, Hal, Francis and others: this just isn't right, to bash someone who just died. Come on man, you can be better than that.

                              Rob Ford will wind up famous for being famous, rather for any significant achievements. He is like Paris Hilton and the Kardashians, and his fame is a reflection of our times; scoring 'fame' and media coverage extolling it, ahead of thousands of unknown others who make real and lasting contributions to our society.

                              His claim to fame is being elected as Mayor of Toronto, a role he failed ingloriously once he attained it.

                              At his core, Rob Ford was a bully. There were some peripheral positives with him, I admit. But victims of bullying, such as myself, can recognize the situation for what it was.

                                Out of curiousity I Googled etiquette concerning speaking ill of the dead, and I found near the top of the search results the following link, which argues distinguishing between speaking ill of private vs. public deceased persons. In mentioning this, I would add that I didn't refrain from praying for Rob Ford when I first learned that he had developed cancer:
