General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Another idea that I mentioned elsewhere is a seperate forum for chess variants - a poll could be taken by the administrator if in doubt.
I prefer the term "heterodox" chess. Some variants are so different that many orthodox players will angrily reject it as un-chess or not chess at all. In the spirit of "hetero" chess, I offer the following ...

Cool diagram Nigel. I can't figure out the rules of this chess variant, though. Maybe I don't understand something about the kind of attachment you gave, which appears to only give just the same diagram, only smaller. Also, it looks like it might take a lot of moves to finish a game on a board of this size from whatever the starting position for the variant ought to be, depending on the rules (if checkmating just one of the kings suffices, that might help a bit).

I made some kind of mistake with the attachment. I'm not sure quite what.
Anyway, you are right, checkmating one of the Kings will suffice. (Imagine a discovered quadruple check with double check on both Kings! Winning at once! lol)
Incidently, I had read somewhere that Bughouse was not so helpful for developing good habits among novice (especially children) chess-players, and then I read the following from Elizabeth (nee Vicary) Spiegel somewhere:
" (on bughouse, quoting another author) ... it teaches players to evaluate many complex pieces of information simultaneously, make quick and on-going judgments about which factors are the most important, and requires teamwork and flexible but accurate thinking."
Perhaps those that are too myopic in regard to orthodox chess will be convinced of the usefulness of variants or heterodox chess when the latter is shown to be part of the preparation and motivation for successful players.
Then again, maybe not.
I showed some of the children in my local chess club how to play Bughouse and then, the following week, they wanted to START with Bughouse.
uh oh....

I can imagine a triple check (not always winning instantly), but at this point, at least, I cannot imagine a quadruple check ever being possible. That's if the rules to this massive-board variant are anything like for standard chess.

The topic of this thread is How to improve ChessTalk Not how to 'improve' chess.
Another way to improve ChessTalk, but not mentioned in any post thus far, is for the moderator to urge posters who are off-topic to start a new thread! Presumably, the moderator would stay on topic himself.

lol. OK, Vlad, I will start a heterodox (variants, etc.) thread.

Our's is imbedded into vBulletin, and you use [PGN] tags to get it to work. I recommend you register on OzChess and give it a try, if you like it we can talk about getting this installed here.
OzChess - Australia's Chess Forum- Upcoming Chess Tournaments, Game Analysis, Chess Politics, & Australian Chess News http://www.ozchess.com
Okay. If you want me to put you in touch with the guy who did ours, let me know. He charged about $50. Also, our's includes tags, for instance event and time control. The one used on the other forum (main competitors) does not allow tags, so they have to be added manually to the post. Also, their's is much smaller as you probably already noticed.
Truthfully, we also used to have a second pgn viewer which worked by attaching pgn files through the attachment button, but when our forum migrated to a more recent version of vB, that mod stopped working. But it was also a beautiful pgn viewer. If this forum is willing to split costs, I can hire someone to investigate why its not working anymore and get him to repair it and install it on Chess Talk as well.
