  • Canadian Open : First GMs

We added details (including registration fees) on the tournament website : www.echecsmontreal.ca

Please note that registration for the first section (2400+) will start in January, as the entry fee will be based on FIDE rating as of January 1st.
However, several GMs and foreign players have already contacted us for conditions. If you know foreign players who want to play in the 2014 Canadian Open, please tell them to send us an email as soon as possible, as we will soon have spent our entire budget :)

I will start today by announcing the participation of two well-known U.S. grandmasters :

    1) GM Nick de Firmian : Three times U.S. Champion, well-known author
    2) GM John Fedorowicz : Winner of the U.S. Junior Championship ; two-times captain of the U.S. Olympiads team

    Stay tuned for more news!

Thanks Andy... I corrected it. Apparently the tag order matters on the discussion board

Here's the next GM who registered for the tournament :

GM Sergei Tiviakov : Two times Dutch champion and European Champion in 2008. Finished second at the 2009 Montreal International Tournament (behind GM Bacrot).

Another former Dutch champion confirmed his participation at the 2014 Canadian Open. Can you guess who it is?

None of these... Although Sokolov was a nice try, as he played at the Quebec Open last year.

I will guess Loek van Wely.

This is correct! GM Loek van Wely won the Dutch championship 6 times (from 2000 to 2005) and will be present at the 2014 Canadian Open in Montreal :)
He is currently the second highest rated player in his country, behind GM Giri.

For what it's worth - the Netherlands has 30 GM's - including one WGM who is also a "men's" GM.

The Netherlands also has 14 Correspondence Chess GM's.

They have a population of around 16 or 17 million people. Roughly half of our population.
