General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Anthropogenic Planetary Destruction (not a climate change thread)
Situations like the one described in your video is part of the reason why most people take what scientists and peer reviewed journals tell us with a grain of salt. They tend to lie to us and tell us whatever truth those that are signing their pay checks want us to believe. The actions of certain agribusinesses as documented on CBC and public television station documentaries can only be described as scary and worthy of cartoonish James Bond or Austin Powers villains rather than sentient human beings. Alas the real villains may be much worse than the psychopathic fictional ones.
Ironic some people choose to believe in a Monsanto-led conspiracy, yet the same will not entertain even the possibility that the so-called threat of global warming could be a trojan horse meant to lead to the creation of a one world government where nations give up their sovereignty to the UN. I certainly do, especially in the face of climategate (reinforcing Vlad's point in the above quote). Now there are not just some climate 'change' (a safer term for promoters) 'deniers' (a label meant to stigmatize, as if almost on a par with holocaust deniers) who are climate scientists (unlike Suzuki, a man who travels on jets and has multiple homes, who wishes to jail 'deniers'), but now there are more climate scientists who believe in global cooling, which would would be a real problem, as opposed to moderate warming if it actually happened.
I have no problem in believing that conspiracies have been rife throughout history. My schoolyard experiences alone tell me this.
My rant, for people who trust scientists and governments far too much.

Hi Kevin:
My belief - there MUST evolve a New World Order! The planet is shrinking. Technology is integrating the planet - I talk every day to people from India, Ghana, USA, etc.
The Problems - they are now planetary - Climate Change; Global Warming (or Cooling) as a result of pollution world-wide; chemicals destroying our planet by irresponsible global corporations, etc. (as being noted in this thread by lots of studies)
The Issue - who will be the designers - the 1%? all the humans?

Yes, money does influence! We just disagree on who "they" are.
I always "take everything with a grain of salt". Occasionally I do find myself agreeing with the "right" rather than the "left", but it is becoming less often as time passes. Be skeptical of everything, but not everything is a conspiracy. :)

It may typically depend greatly on one's political bent what one chooses to believe is a conspiracy.
When Greenpeace succeeded in unfuroughling a banner on the parliment buildings in Ottawa, Conservatives suspected the NDP of being behind it. Last night, I heard someone suggest on a radio station that Harper and the Conservatives staged the recent security breach in B.C., around the PM (two protesters holding pro-climate change signs in the middle of a long North American cold snap seems fishy, along with the fact they were quickly released, one might think). Personally I believe either accusation could easily be true.

Careful what you wish for. The final form of the new world order may not be the one that you would have hoped for. I suspect that the final form, if allowed to come into existence, will involve beheadings, crucifixion, stonings and many other outcomes which most of us agree would not be optimal. If you allow them to create the framework that makes these things possible, you will be responsible for the outcome.
"The Future" by Leonard Cohen
Give me back my broken night
my mirrored room, my secret life
it's lonely here,
there's no one left to torture
Give me absolute control
over every living soul
And lie beside me, baby,
that's an order!
...
Take the only tree that's left
and stuff it up the hole
in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother:
it is murder.
Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
Won't be nothing
Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
has crossed the threshold
and it has overturned
the order of the soul
When they said REPENT REPENT
I wonder what they meant ...
Oh No - Harper as president of the New World Order Parliament?

By definition Stephen Harper cannot be the antichrist as I have heard him make public statements which disqualify him from this position. Bob, you on the other hand...

Should not this thread be entitled Anthropogenic Planet Destruction?
Hi Keven:
Yikes - my memory?? (sigh): Random House Dictionary - "Anthropomorphic: ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, especially to a deity."
Hmmm - would be like: "This robot has feelings!" Would be ascribing human feelings to something not human.
Sooooo, got the wrong word surely!
But my dictionary is old & hasn't got "Anthropogenic". Can you give me your dicitionary's definition, so I can be sure, before I try to change the subject heading? Thanks.
