Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Science has caused some problems. Science will have to provide the solutions. I don't see a mass movement back to a simple hunter-gatherer lifestyle (not even among most Aboriginal people). Simpler agricultural practices, as opposed to big agribusiness- maybe. Those farmers markets, and the eat-locally (when practicable) movement are becoming more popular.

Anthropogenic Planetary Destruction – The Canada/USA Keystone XL Oil Pipeline
WASHINGTON, USA (AP) -- "The Republican-controlled Senate has passed a bipartisan bill approving construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
The 62-36 vote on Thursday, Jan. 29, advanced a top priority of the newly empowered Grand Old Party, which championed the legislation despite a presidential veto threat. Keystone is the first of many battles with the White House over energy and the environment.
Bob’s RANT: Movement of oil by pipeline has been shown to be risky. There are reports showing that many leaks occur, and also that pipeline companies have not been reporting spills that should have been reported. It is true, that transportation of this resource by any method is risky for humans and for the environment. So, at the very least, one should not build an UNNECESSARY pipeline that brings with it high risk: this is the Keystone XL pipeline.
QUESTIONS:
1. Do you think it is absolutely necessary for Canada and USA to have this pipeline, despite the risks?
2. If it is NOT necessary (there are alternate energy plans available), should it be done because private corporations want to make a profit?
Tourism Economy at Risk?: While TransCanada Corp. insists Quebec will see a $5.8-billion boost to its gross domestic product and secure a significant chunk of employment worth 50,000-person years if its Energy East pipeline is approved, some local leaders aren’t so sure.
For a number of regional lawmakers and business people in communities bordering the St. Lawrence River, the project represents the possible destruction of their economic lifeblood: tourism. They simply don’t believe the benefit projections from TransCanada. The National Energy Board (NEB) just rejected Enbridge’s request for permission to restart its Line 9 pipeline until further notice.
It turns out that Enbridge has failed to meet one of the most important and basic safety requirements – providing proof that there are emergency shut-off valves on both sides of all major water crossings along the pipeline’s route.
These valves are critical. If the pipeline were to rupture anywhere near a river and there was no valve, huge quantities of oil could spill into the waterway, even if the pipeline had been shut down by the company.

The SLAPP Lawsuit

SLAPP Lawsuit: A strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition.[1]
The typical SLAPP plaintiff does not normally expect to win the lawsuit. The plaintiff's goals are accomplished if the defendant succumbs to fear, intimidation, mounting legal costs or simple exhaustion and abandons the criticism. In some cases, repeated frivolous litigation against a defendant may raise the cost of directors and officers liability insurance for that party, interfering with an organization's ability to operate.[2] A SLAPP may also intimidate others from participating in the debate. A SLAPP is often preceded by a legal threat. The difficulty is that plaintiffs do not present themselves to the Court admitting that their intent is to censor, intimidate or silence their critics. Hence, the difficulty in drafting SLAPP legislation, and in applying it, is to craft an approach which affords an early termination to invalid abusive suits, without denying a legitimate day in court to valid good faith claims.
"Kinder Morgan, builder of the Trans Mountain pipeline in British Columbia, Canada, is dropping its multimillion-dollar civil suit against all five Burnaby Mountain (where KM was trying to survey) protesters and is willing to pay their court costs.
Kinder Morgan announced its latest legal move in a Friday-afternoon press release stating the company has filed a "unilateral discontinuance" of the suit that's been hanging over the heads of five protesters.
Stephen Collis, Lynne Quarmby, Alan Dutton, Mia Nissen and Adam Gold were all named in the suit filed when Kinder Morgan sought an injunction to stop people from interfering with survey work for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
Unilateral discontinuance means Kinder Morgan may have to pay the protesters' court costs and the suit will be dropped whether they agree or not.
Jason Gratl, lawyer for Nissen and Gold, said the news was hilarious.
"The timing is not coincidental," said Gratl, who suspected Kinder Morgan would rather pay his clients' court fees than hand over information he requested on Gold and Nissen.
"My clients imposed a (time) limit of Jan. 30 for production of the plaintiff's documents - all documents dealing with the plaintiff's communication with their contractors, including their public relations consultants and their private investigators," Gratl said.
