General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The CFC usually does a fundraiser and asks for donations etc. I have contributed in the past and no doubt so have you. Is money really the issue here? I remember the days when Sid Belzberg was sponsoring the team...
There is no doubt in my mind that the CFC can raise the necessary funds from the Canadian chess community, if they make this a priority.
Larry
I spoke to Michael von Keitz and Hal Bond yesterday for about an hour on Skype. Fundraising for the Olympiad is a priority. I am optimistic that we will field two of the stronger teams in recent memory for both teams. A prominent member of the chess community has very generously offered a sponsorship package to take care of the players appearance fees. We have to fulfill a number of very reasonable conditions in order for that to happen.
I do not believe your statement " In no other sport do you see an individual representing his country at the Olympics and not getting paid" is correct.
Actually, I do not know anybody who is paid, except expenses, to participate and represent his/her country. There are rewards based on performance - and chess should not be different.
The whole concept of Olympiad is pride and honour to represent your country and not monetary compensation. Legends in other sports said nothing compares with winning for your country.
I googled the question "do Canadian Olympians get paid" and there are a number of answers out there. This is the internet, so buyer beware. This seems pretty generic, from http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question...5182307AAlAQY1
"I am not aware of any nation that pays its citizens for competing in the Olympics, or at least not over the table."
So, no one knows why we lost a great sponsor. Maybe that is a problem in itself!!
As long as he remained just a sponsor, things were great. But in 2002 in Bled, he also bought his way into captaining the team, a position for which, to be kind, he had no credentials for, unless one considers being under Spraggett's heavy handed influence as credential. Of course the whole thing turned into a mess.
This is probably the main reason why a "great sponsor" was lost, but insisting on being team captain was sure to lead to disaster. Belzberg had no one to blame (besides the CFC who went along with it) but himself for that.
Are we all posting our job titles and the companies we work at now?
I think it is ok when it is relevant to the thread. When the OP wrote "First of all, these players should without a doubt be getting paid" I made the assumption he was going to use his position with his company to ask for sponsorship.
This is a thread where you can discuss YOUR 2014 Canadian Olympiad Team.
Let me get the ball rolling with my thoughts.
First of all, these players should without a doubt be getting paid. They take two weeks out of their life (TWO WEEKS OF PAY), to play in a chess tournament. In no other sport do you see an individual representing his country at the Olympics and not getting paid. Why should Chess be any different?
Chess players aren't very healthy individuals to start off with, and loss of two weeks of pay can be quite disastrous. That's two weeks of lessons ($60/hr), simuls, lectures, etc... Heck, they would be better off going to an open tournament and getting an APPEARANCE FEE.
Also, I would like to see a PROFESSIONAL Canadian chess team at the next Olympiad, not a tourist team who banks on a free trip. An all GM team would be nice.
It would be nice and the Olympiad is also an opportunity for a Canadian to get norms for a GM title as has been the case over the last few Olympiads.
I am fairly optimistic that Anton Kovalyov, Eric Hansen, and Bator Sambuev will represent Canada at the Olympiad based on their early feedback. It would be great if we could add Kevin Spraggett to the group. If he were inclined that way he might remove a certain graphic with regard to Bator in the interests of team spirit.
With all due respect to Noritsyn, and in no way am I trying to offend him, but he simply isn't a professional player, but a chess tourist. Olympiads are a chance for him to go sight-seeing, not to represent his chess country.
Nine times out of ten when someone says "with all due respect" the statement that comes after does not give all due respect. Nikolay did well when he has played in the Olympiad and he apparently has coached Harmony Zhu who just happens to have won the world championship. I've heard the expression,"What have you done for us lately?" but perhaps you should give him a moment to bask in the glory of this recent triumph before you start to bash him.
Kovalyov, Hansen, Spraggett and Sambuev are all mature professionals who take the game seriously. I would like to see the CFC make a serious offer to Spraggett to represent our country. None of this "Please Spraggett, come play with us and make us an all GM-team. We will pay your flight and give you lunch money". But a serious offer as in: "Hi Kevin, as the CFC, we would like to put our past differences aside. As Canada's most accomplished player, we would like to work together to put the best product on the market. I offer you $XXXX, free flight, free accommodation, and free meals. Please let me know if this is reasonable. We have a chance to make history with this all GM team."
I along with all the other readers of Chesstalk eagerly await the details of your sponsorship package to help make this happen. I believe that we will have the players appearance fees covered but we will need support to actually get our two teams and captains to the Olympiad (a prerequisite for the other sponsorship package).
Keep in mind both Hansen and Spraggett are currently residing in Europe, so that is already money saved on flights. Money saved on flights that an be used ELSEWHERE. Elsewhere does not include your pockets.
Putting aside the offensiveness of your last comment, I am puzzled as to how saving a few hundred euros on a budget that is likely to be in the twenty to twenty five thousand dollar or even higher range translates into money that can be used elsewhere. I doubt that the flight savings will even begin to make up for the recent slide in the Canadian dollar against the Euro in which many of our expenses will be denominated for this event.

How about it, Andy?
That's odd; when I saw that information I thought the exact opposite.
