General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: PC's Fading??: Ontario - Next Provincial Government??
Yeah, starting to look more like another minority.
In this riding it all the same candidates for the three partys. I don't know why the PC's and NDP would use the same candidates and expect a different result.
Re: PC's Fading??: Ontario - Next Provincial Government??
Hi Bob,
It's starting to look like the NDP is the party which would do the least damage.
The Liberals are starting to sound desperate, falling just short of predicting biblical plagues if they lose. The PC's wanting us to buy into putting 100,000 people out of work.

I'd love to be optimistic, and say the silent middle will say a pox on both the PC's and the Lib's, and vote NDP. But the PC's and the Lib's can't stand each other, and their soft voters will not abandon them on this one.
It ain't going to happen - this is not the Bob Rae scenario, I am afraid.
And the NDP'ers are caught in the crosshairs in ridings where the PC's and Lib's are in a horserace - the NDP'ers can't even comprehend the damage from a PC government, and will do anything, even vote Lib., holding their nose, to keep the PC's out.
Re: Looks like a 2-horse close race: Ontario - Next Provincial Government??
I honestly do not understand Ontario politics.
The Liberal's record over the past decade is atrocious. The mismanagement is unbelievable. The patform makes promises that we all know they cannot keep (see their balanced budget promise).
The Conservatives run on a slash and burn platform guaranteed to make the average voter go running afraid. Seriously, create 1 million jobs and eliminate 100,000 jobs at the same time??
What are the NDP doing wrong? They should be able to beat both these guys with their eyes closed. Are Ontario voters that much afraid after the Bob Rae days, 25 years later?
And this is coming from someone with a fiscally conservative bent.

They propped the government up for quite a while. That damages their brand as people who like the Liberals will vote for the liberals and those that don't will vote against both the Liberals and NDP. I don't think Hudak will be able to lay off that many people without it costing him more in severence than its worth. Attrition is the way to slash. Killing the green energy programs will save lots of money and allow electricity prices to fall which will get the province's manufacturing sector going again. Its no surprise that Toyota is talking about building their own power plants. The ones run by Ontario are just too expensive.

I intend to vote for the NDP. I think Horvath would do the least damage.
This is somewhat discouraging. Back in Feb./14, Tories were slightly in front. And with the election one week away, and having suffered through the campaign, we see: no change!
Election too close to call, poll suggests
Ontario voters look set to elect another minority government in an election next Thursday that is too close to call.
Should we start a pool on how long a minority PC government (I tremble even thinking it) will last?? I hope not long, because their damage potential is quite high!

Bob A
Yeah we really can't afford to have a party that wants to balance the budget in there. It will seem too unnatural in Ontario.
The Liberals have been good for chess and not much else. Looking forward to reduced hydro costs if Hudak wins.

Hi Vlad:
Although the headline says "close", in fact, whereas the Feb. poll had the PC's slightly ahead, this latest poll actually had the Liberals ahead by 2 % (which, with the margin of error allowed, is still admittedly close).
But it is so close, and the vote so close, that 2% may be much more significant at this point than earlier on.
If Hudak doesn't make it, it will be the best thing ever for the PC's. He'll be gone, and the PC's can try to move back in from right of Atilla the Hun! :D Maybe then they'd get power (unbelievable if they don't with the Liberals stinking up the ship).

Let's look at one of Hudak's promises.
"On the chopping block are 100,000 jobs and any wage increases in the public sector, a 30 per cent tuition grant for college and university students and a tax credit of up to $1,500 a year for seniors who renovate their homes to make them more accessible."
Do you think a senior who need to install handles beside his toilet (as an example) so he can get from his wheelchair to the toilet, or keep himself steady cares about Hudak balancing the budget?
And, the other parts are sure to cost votes as well.
I voted at the advance poll and it wasn't for Hudak.
One thing though, I notice the Ontario Savings Bonds are on sale now. They will likely be a safer investment with a PC government. For those who have the money to lend to the government.
