General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It doesn't much matter to me who FIDE has as an opponent for Anand in the WC match. I doubt Carlsen can defeat him a second time. Like in the old days when they had rematches and a challenger won the match but lost the rematch.
I read stuff like "Kirsan is next" but never a time frame. It's like those who stand on the corner with a sign reading "The World is Ending".
1. I very much doubt that FIDE actually want Carlsen to be defaulted. Given that he's not just the world number one by miles, and an active one at that, I see no political advantage to kicking him out. It would not be clever and it would not be well-received.
2. As the match is not being played in the EU, who is or is not on an EU blacklist may not be considered pertinent. (There's a contrast to be made with the 1992 Fischer-Spassky match, where I believe the sanctions on the then Yugoslavia were imposed by the UN.) Moreover Norway, of which country Magnus Carlsen is a citizen, is not a member of the EU.
The next in line to take Magnus' spot is Karjakin who the Russians are spending a ton of money on, so who knows maybe its worth it to them, to create havoc around the chess world in order to try to crown a Russian as the World Champion. In any case, I don't see why Carlsen would refuse this match, he could have argued for money earlier, when it was first announced and I am sure that they will find a way to pay the money if the match does take place, regardless of any possible sanctions.

At minimum, the situation is unclear with a potentially sizable downside. Carlsen, very wisely it would seem, prefers not to make a contractual commitment in such circumstances.

I'd assume Anand has signed his contract as no one seems to have said otherwise. Do you not think Carlsen will be forfeited if he does not sign the contract by the deadline?
I noticed one writeup mentions the size of the prize money. That it's less than last time. Makes me wonder if it's not about the money.
Do I smell a new chess federation in the offing? I guess we'll see.

Other than pressure on Carlsen from the Norwegian Chess Federation, there may be other sorts of pressures. Perhaps the Norwegian regime itself may be applying pressure. Why?
Norway is going to get absolutely hammered on the Russian counter-sanctions with a 1-year ban (extendable if necessary) on the imports of agricultural products, raw materials, and foodstuffs from a number of countries including the Kingdom of Norway ...

Norway has a long history of going along with international sanctions, especially those initiated by the US and the EU. Those now looming against Russia, however, put the squeeze on longstanding, “special” and not least lucrative relations with an important and powerful neighbour....
Norway exported seafood valued at NOK 6.5 billion (USD 1 billion) to Russia last year, accounting for 76 percent of all Norwegian exports to Russia. Godzimirski said companies keen on doing business in the offshore supply branch can also be hit, along with locally important joint ventures in the border area around Kirkenes and elsewhere in Northern Norway. Norway’s largest company, Statoil, has long been concerned about how Russia’s controversial politics would affect its pending deals with Russian companies, and Norway’s huge oil and gas sector stands to lose business.
That's one billion (US) dollars worth of exports just in seafood alone. Small potatoes? I think not.
Re: WC match set for Sochi - Carlsen under pressure?
I would assume Russia will replace much of what it got from Norway and North America with produce and other items from South America.
Norway should do OK. They have a sovereign wealth fund of close to 1 Trillion dollars. They don't need to sell fish to survive. You would think such a rich nations would do something to have one of their citizens continue to hold a prestigious title like the Fide World Chess Championship.
I've seen reports on Twitter that IllusionOf has agreed to an extension to Sep 7th for Carlsen to sign... @anandcarlsen14 on Twitter
I think it's already been decided if Carlsen will sign or not. This is simply to show a willingness to accommodate him and give him every chance to comply before they pull out the rug. It shows FIDE to be flexible good guys.
Re: WC match set for Sochi - Carlsen under pressure?
E.Sutovsky wrote on Facebook that he chatted with the Carlsen's manager. They did not understand where dates like Aug 29 or other came out as the contract had no firm deadline.
The Anand's manager (his wife) confirmed that V.A. signed the contract.
