General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Care to provide some details? Like names and some arguments to back up your accusation (i.e. arguments that don't sound like they've been copied/pasted from some 1960s political nostalgia site)?
The recent events in Ukraine are an excellent example. The incineration of protestors in Odessa by a violent mob, the bombing of civilians, schools, hospitals, the torment and killing of journalists, etc., etc., meet with a practical deafening silence by the corporate media here in Canada. You'd think they'd care about journalists hit by artillery from the Kiev regime and its "militias". When the PM of Ukraine calls Russians "sub-humans" and suggest that they be "eliminated" ... and this is passed over in silence by the media, what should one think?
So too, in the UK, for example, when 50,000 people demonstrated outside the BBC just this week against the awful coverage of the cruel austerity policies of the Westminister regime .. there was dead silence from the BBC itself. One could go on. The alternate media/media reform movement has plenty more.
These antediluvian views are simply re-gurgitating the government's own cold war nostalgia perspective. There is not critical journalistic distance at all. And that's what we should get from an "independent and free press". The truth is that the "press" is free for those who own one. And Canada has some of the highest media concentration (few owners with vast ownership) around.

Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
I see Mig Greengard (chess journalist/part of G.K. campaign?) Edit: on G.K. website, Mig is referred to as his "aide"
has taken a rather dim view of the Canadian endorsement of IllusionOf...
Mig Greengard @chessninja
Unless Drkulec is just making the whole thing up, which seems just as likely. Not sure which option makes him look worse.
Mig Greengard @chessninja
Maybe Drkulec should have actually spoken to people from the Kasparov campaign instead of this mysterious & unnamed "Kasparov loyalist."
Mig Greengard @chessninja
Drkulec, prez of Canadian chess fed, was told by someone (who?) Obama would call him for Kasparov & he didn't, so he's voting Kirsan?! Lol.

Reason: clarification of Mig Greengard's collaboration with G.K.

I don't like to complain, but I will! When I spoke to the reporter yesterday he was serious about the international implications of Canada's chess federation's decision to support a Putin crony against me in the FIDE election. There is good reason to be serious, because even if you don't care about chess, or using the chess federation as a Russian asset, FIDE is the first major international sports organization to recognize Russian control of Crimea, over protests by the Ukrainian federation (which supports me). If this stands, other major federations like the IOC and FIFA can use it as a precedent and they are already under pressure from the Kremlin to do this. Not mentioning this in the story is a serious omission.
As for the statements of the Canadian federation president, what can be said? He didn't speak to me or anyone on my campaign staff that we are aware of. But he was so offended by some "Kasparov people" he is supporting a Kremlin ally he admits has done nothing at all for chess in Canada? Why? Who did he talk to? Why not talk to me instead? I may have a fearsome reputation but I do not bite, unlike a famous Uruguayan footballer!
I don't see any upside for Canadian chess coming out of such an interview.
The narrative that the Kasparov campaign are trying to spin is this FIDE election is all about Putin and aliens. If it is and he still loses what does that say. Front page of the Globe and Mail. Here comes the blowback Sid Belzberg promised.

Who cares? I thought the idea was to pick the person who would be best for Canadian chess. I don't know why it has to be explained to the entertainment media.
That article today will sit on the bottom of bird cages tomorrow. And I'll cancel my subscription as soon as it comes up because I didn't like the article.
He did interview Kasparov recently. We seem to be getting into a mouse that roared scenario.
Now the Kasparov people are claiming that we never talked to them. I guess they are disavowing all knowledge of their campaign team in Canada.
You talked to me and i am not sure who else. As I explained to you several times I am a friend of Gary's and a past patron of Canadian Chess that included almost single handedly financing both men's and women's teams for two different olympiads as well as donating tens of thousands of dollars worth of chess clocks for youth tournaments as well as financing two Canadian Closed tournaments.
I am not an official part of a campaign team and in fact as I already said other peoples actions have been independent of mine. As discussed with Hal Bond I was exploring various ways I could help together with Gary in getting involved in Canadian chess again. This included heavy promotion of chess in schools, possibly having big international tournaments in Canada and fostering promising youth talent. The first olympiad team we sponsored in Slovenia in 2002 included young Charboneau and Bluvstein who went on to become grandmasters. Pascal has remained life long friends with me.
At one point you said that i have "interests' to protect. Well did it ever occur to you that chess has been a big part of my life and i simply like helping out where I can? Yes I found it very disturbing and upsetting that you were getting the CFC into bed with some pretty evil people. THe CFC received more help from me then FIDE under Kirsan did for Canada ever. The majority of people here have been misled by a small minority and that my friend is very upsetting. Do you really believe that Kirsan will deliver on any promises for Canada? The fact is that i have a track record of delivering in Canada and he does not.
Vlad here is an out for you, Fide has simply deleted two different Federations from their web site that supported Gary and replaced them with newly minted federations hand picked by Kirsan (Gabon and Afghanistan). This is completely unlawful and Canada would have every right to rescind it's support in view of FIDEs unlawful actions. Do that and i can assure you that I will work with the CFC in helping out as I originally described with Hal and we can stop fighting and do what is truly best for chess in Canada.

This makes your side look desperate. You might want to reconsider horse-trading on the pages of ChessTalk as a strategy.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
Or maybe this is just a fall-back position on your part?
In any case, the caravan moves on. It's really a waste of time to argue over things that have already been decided.
Firstly, I don't know what you mean about a fall-back position. If you're suggesting that at any time I was pressing for a vote or even an endorsement for Kasparov, go back through my posts, you won't find any evidence of that..
Secondly, who's arguing? I asked a question, probably a question that many would like to see answered. Vlad presented, in the media that you so roundly criticize, a view that neither FIDE election candidate will affect chess in Canada. If he really meant that, he should have and would have pushed for abstention, given the polarization of the voting members AND given the firestorm of controversy on the subject right here on ChessTalk. Instead, Vlad pushed for the very action that will only exacerbate that controversy and will alienate almost half the voting members from the CFC Executive. He's already motivated Sasha Starr to begin a campaign against this decision and against Vlad's CFC presidency. Plus along the way he alienated a potential corporate sponsor. Vlad's decision will be reverberating negatively for quite some time in the Canadian chess community, diverting attention and sponsorship away from the very things Vlad wants us to be focusing on. He has no one to blame but himself.
Vlad's entire presentation in that interview is a sham. Why aren't you criticizing THAT media presentation? They sugarcoated the whole controversy, with the help of a patronizing Vlad Drkulec.
The best example of that was Vlad's quote in the article about KI being Buddhist in nature and seeking "world peace".
"Holy beauty pageant, Batman! KI is just a sweet innocent seeking world peace!"
"Yes, Robin. And so was Saddam Hussein. And Khadafi in Libya. And now, Assad in Syria and Putin in Russia. Unfortunately, Robin, the obsequious corporate media just won't leave these gentle peace-lovers alone. But maybe Vlad Drkulec can get the message across."
You say, Nigel, the caravan moves on, yet you continue your hate-filled campaign here against those in Canada and indeed the whole world that have done things you don't agree with. You say arguing about past decisions is a waste of time... and then you argue against past decisions!
The caravan moves on for those who do things YOU agree with, which at least for now includes Vlad. For all others, you take the time to rail against them, calling them vile and sinister and all sorts of other hate-mongering names not suitable to be read by children, while simultaneously censoring someone else for posting a news account that you deemed inappropriate for children.
The Emperor has no clothes!
I also took note that in this post on another thread,
"to this very day it is official US military doctrine that no outside body shall be allowed to prosecute US soldiers for war crimes and such offenses. They view themselves as above international law. Literally."
What you might want to think about, given what you obviously think about this U.S. immunity, is your OWN immunity here on this board. You are the only poster here who cannot have his posts censored. You are above moderator law. Literally.
In order to be consistent with your own views, you should REFRAIN from posting opinion here at all. But of course, you won't see it that way. For you, it is ok for children to read your hate-filled rants. Not anyone else's though... unless they agree with you.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
