    Final position

    Peter Doggers at chess.com:

White apparently resigned on her opponent's move.

Instead 106...Kh2, the only other move, draws. White can be cornered but not mated. One important detail: After the text, 107. Kf3 Rg7 is not a stalemate since 108. Rh1+ Kg5 109. Ne6+ is a fork

    Vietnam – Georgia 1 1-3

    Vo Thi-Dzagnidze 0-1
    Javakhishvili-Pham 0.5-0.5
    Hoang-Batsiashvili 0-1
    Arabidze-Nguyen 0.5-0.5

    Peter Doggers at chess.com:

GM Nino Batsiashvili had a curious rope-a-dope strategy. After 19 moves, she had most of her pawns still sitting at home, while all but one of White's had advanced (at one point four-wide from a4 to d4).

Things were even more pronounced a few moves later, when the host lady let her guest improve while she moved her heavies around in the corner. Black's pieces then came to life en masse, almost like Batsiashvili got to make several moves at once

At the first rest day Nikolay Noritsyn has 4 wins and a perfect score! A huge congratulations. Now Canada (and Nikolay) will be jousting with all GM teams. I want to wish Nikolay and the rest of the team all the best in those encounters!

Team Canada (open) is sitting close to their starting ranking thanks to a huge win by Nikolay in the last round which saved a 2-2 tie for the team.

The ladies are sitting in 11th position (actually pretty much the same as 10th place Kazakhstan) so in my mind in the top ten! Congratulations, keep it up! In their earlier matchup against Team USA they came very close to a 2-2 tie. Impressive.

So is MJ, also with 4/4; but Nikolay has scored 4/4 all with Black!

After the team was announced I interviewed Eric and Aman in Montreal, and they said they thought Nikolay would end up playing Black a lot at the Olympiad.I said I thought that would be a bad choice since (I thought) the best outcome for Canada at this Olympiad was a GM Norm for Nik. But they said "no", Nik actually scores better with Black than he scores with White! That's not quite true -- according to CanBase, he scores around 72% as White and Black over the past 5 years -- but that's much better than the typical 10% drop between White and Black results.

I suppose that make Nikolay the anti-Pelts of the Canadian team!? (ask your grandparents)

Check out Nik's round 2 game where he shows what he can do with Black, and Bareev's round 3 game around move 50-52 for a totally loony position.

Likely, Nikolay is the only player for the entire Olympiad who played all games with black and scored 100% (obviously, I don't count some players who play 1 or 2 games). Indeed, it was a plan to give him as much black as possible. However, the "Nikolay with black" strategy takes a break today as he plays white against Cheparinov. Color adjusting is great, but sometimes we need to take other factors into account.

About a GM norm opportunity - Olympiad norm doesn't count twice as it used to be. In 2010 (T.Roussel-Roozmon) and 2012 (E.Hansen) entered the Olympiad having 1 norm only and became GMs after the Olympiad. Eric had a lot of 2600+ performances since 2012, but for Thomas it was actually his last great result, so for him this rule was really important.

So, as a norm opportunity Olympiad is no better tournament than any other event. One of the requirements is the average opponent's rating of 2380. While this requirement is usually not a problem in individual tournamens, it could be a problem for team events, especially if a player performs better than his team in general. Although, a 2715 opponent today should help.

As a team, we don't have a great tournaments so far; I am talking about National Team only, ladies play very well. Some of our players had a very long period of inactivity and need certain time to return to normal shape, very likely they will play better in the 2nd half. The problem is that we have a low number of individual points, I expect more "not-friendly" pairings (like today) in the coming rounds.

Of the top 5 picks (pre-Olympics) only Azerbaijan has set a torrid pace with a perfect 6-0 team performance. They will meet the surprising Polish team (also 6-0 including beating the mighty Russians) in the next round.
