  • History in the making?

Both Qiyu Zhou and Maili-Jade Ouellet seem well primed to establish some significant Canadian chess history. Canada has never had a WYCC Champion older than 10. Jeff Sarwer (at the age of 8!) and his sister Julia both won the U10 (Open and Girls) WYCC in 1986, Jason Cao the U10 WYCC in 2010 and Harmony Zhu the U8 WYCC GIrls last year.

After 5 rounds, Qiyu Zhou, the 4th seed in the U14 Girls, is in a 2-way tie for 1st with the 10th seed, Ashritha Eswaran, whom she meets in R6. Seeds 1,2, 3, and 5 all sit a 1/2 point back at 4/5.

Maili-Jade Ouellet, the 15th seed in the U12 Girls, in is a 4-way tie for 1st with the 3rd, 6th, and 16th seeds. The top seed, Olga Badelka, from Buigaria, is a full point back at 3.5 and the 2nd seed, Aleksandra Maltsevskaya, from Russia, is on the same 3.5 score.

    Go Qiyu and Maili-Jade!!

At this point both girls are doing well in this patzer's evaluation.

And Stockfish certainly agrees, having Qiyu better by 1.29 pawns (after 18 moves) and Maili-Jade by 0.84 (after 16 moves)

Qiyu has an overwhelming position after just 20 moves and will clearly win her game to attain clear 1st with 5.5/6 (:

Maili-Jade unfortunately threw away her win (Stockfish had her plus 4.41) and had to settle for a 1/2 point. She now slips a 1/2 point behind the sole leader, Jennifer Yu, the American girl that Maili-Jade finished in a joint tie for 1st at the 2013 NAYYC - U12G in Toronto.

Qiyu is a 1/2 point ahead of 4 girls (3 if the #3 seed doesn't convert her Q/3P vs Q/2P endgame), the number 1, 3 (see preceding comment), 5, and 7 seeds. All 5 girls are due Black in R7 so my guess is that Qiyu will get Whie against the top seed, Polina Shuvalova, from Russia, on the premise that the higher seed gets their colour. But I could clearly be wrong.

Polina got a bit of a 'cheap' win today, imho, when her opponent resigned rather prematurely. Polina had 2 Knights for a Bishop & 3 Pawns and while clearly better, I'm surprised that Shengxin Zhao didn't opt to soldier on (Stockfish had it at plus 1.45, by no means always winning at this level of chess).

The player with the higher score gets their due colour. If players have the same score, then the higher rated player gets their colour.

For round 7, Qiyu and MJ both get Black on board 1 against higher-rated opponents.

I'll grant you, John, that 2124 is 5 bigger than 2119 (both FIDE), but "higher-rated" is a tad aggrandized in Qiyu's situation (:

Thanks for the pairing rules clarification. So why didn't Qiyu get Black against the top seed Polina Shuvalova (in which case I couldn't quibble with your "higher rated")?

Qiyu has the higher score, by 1/2 point. Therefore she gets black, as she had white the previous round. It looks like instead of higher rated they used the highest performance rating to select her opponent. Vaishali's performance rating is 2125, Shuvalova's is 2112. It was fun leading the cheerleading for Harmony Zhu's 2013 WYCC-U8G Gold Medal run last year and I have all the faith in the world that Qiyu Zhou may well duplicate that Gold Medal feat. Not only is she leading the field by a 1/2 point as the 4th seed with 5 rounds to go, but she's a year older than the top 3 seeds. Moreover, she's a veritable seasoned veteran at these events. Here's her Silver Medal result (for Finland at the time) in the 2008 WYCC-U8G in Vietnam.

Qiyu drew a very hard fought game in round seven, giving up the exchange to lock the position down tight. At this point, Jade is also heading for a draw. They both have a long way to go but they and we can be very proud of their performance.

The top seed, Polina Shuvalova. lost today to the #5 seed, Ye Yuan, so Qiyu is now a full point ahead of the top two seeds and a 1/2 point ahead of the #3 seed, Ramesh Babu Vaishali, whom Qiyu drew with today in R7. Qiyu and Ye Yuan now lead the field with 6/7 and are paired tomorrow on board one with Qiyu having the White pieces. Go Qiyu!

Maili-Jade's draw today against the #3 seed, Jennifer Yu, leaves Maili-Jade a 1/2 point behind the co-leader (Jennifer Yu) who now shares 1st with the #9 seed, Jiner Zhu. Maili-Jade is in a 3-way tie for 3rd with the #1 and #7 seeds. Maili-Jade is paired tomorrow on board two against the top seed, Olga Badelka, from Belarus, and will also have the White pieces. Go Maili-Jade!
