I wrote about Olga in detail on the French board. "BLR" stands for Belarus.

    Go Canada!

Both Qiyu and Maili-Jade have opened with 1.d4.

Interesting move order in Qiyu's game. Maili-Jade looks to have a comfortable position.

Qiyu and her opponent are both running low on time if they are to get to the 40-move control. Otherwise, the game looks level.

Qiyu has just pocketed another draw for 6.5/8 to remain tied for the lead. Jade slipped and sadly lost.

Qiyu's draw today means that Qiyu, the #4 seeed, is in a 3-way tie for 1st with today's opponent, the #5 seed, Ye Yuan, from China, and the #6 seed, Oliwia Kiolbasa, from Poland, all with 6.5/8. Three rounds to go and Qiyu is still primed to establish some Canadian chess history (:

Through the first 8 rounds, age has trumped rating. Qiyu, Ye, and Oliwia are all born in the year 2000. The top 3 seeds are all 'juniors', born in the year 2001.

She could have won a clean pawn at the very end: 45.Qd2! (instead of 45.b6) Ra8 46.b6 Qc6 47.Nxa5 Qxb6 48.Nxb7 Qxb7 49.Rxd5 Qxb3 50.Rxc5. Of course, this major-piece endgame with all pawns on the same side is far from easy to win.

There is still a hard road ahead. Qiyu's opponent tomorrow is the number one seed, rated 2256 (nearly 140 points higher), the Russian girl, Shuvalova Polina. It should be a real doozer. Meanwhile, the two other players at 6.5 play one another.

Less than 80 points on a live basis, Gordon. Qiyu has added 22.4 FIDE points in Durban while Polina has shed 36 points (:

After owning first board since the fourth round, Qiyu finally drops to board two and faces the top seed!

Qiyu's game can be followed live at:

                          http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2014-...lina-Zhou_Qiyu

You might want to also check out the game between Qiyu's 2 co-leaders on board one:

                          http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2014-...iolbasa_Oliwia

Current standings list Ye 1st (she has 6 wins to Qiyu's 5, and that's the 2nd tie-break after head-to-head), Qiyu 2nd, and Oliwia 3rd so the best result for Qiyu is either a draw or a win by Oliwia. Providing both Oliwia and Qiyu can at least draw today, then they would be paired on board one in the penultimate round tomorrow (:

Wow! Polina has used all of 80 seconds (1:35:10 on her clock!) for her first 13 moves and has a horrible/losing position to show for it. Go Qiyu!

Great game! The kings got some serious frequent flyer miles in that game. Really clutch and awesome king march!

With two rounds to go, Qiyu sits atop the standings with Oliwia at 7 1/2, a half point clear of the field. Qiyu is slightly better on the primary tie break. The next couple of days should be high drama.
Today's game was an amazing spectacle. It makes me dizzy to replay it. Absolutely wild, with Kings driven all over the board and pieces flying. Great sport.
                                Go Qiyu, go.
