Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I am not sure what to think of these CFC bonus points that you receive for achieving an all time high etc. It is hard to tell how much better your getting at chess since your getting these bonus points which inflate your rating.
Besides if I plan on playing tournaments in the United States in the near future they are going to take my inflated CFC rating to put me in the corresponding USCF tournament section.

1) You're improving when you notice your opponents are playing worse.
2) You're improving when you play 100 games a year and do not lose rating points.
3) You're improving if you can maintain your rating playing against adults.
i) You're not improving if you got rating gains from beating the same people 100 points lower rated than you.
ii) You're not improving if you look at your games from 1 year ago and think you played brilliantly.
iii) You're not improving if your winning streak to Bob Gillanders was snapped in the past 12 months.
We went over ratings and results for a few previous years before we determined that there was a co-relation between players reaching new personal highs and future performance. We considered that a 20 point bonus for achieving a new life time high would be justified by the data. It has been 3 years since the bonus point formula has been implemented and there are no signs of inflation or deflation so far.
Of course someone who is improving their results in Canada but is not active in the US will have a temporary rating differential.
I am very interested in ratings being a good measure of quality over time and have a few questions.
Which statistical measure shows a correlation between reaching all-time high and improved play? I understand that this all-time bonus study had been done on a less generous performance rating system and I am wondering if the new performance bonuses still justify the all-time-high bonus.
Using which statistical measure(s) or indicators are we seeing no ratings inflation?
Have we ever investigated a) having higher K-factors for lower rated/junior players, b) having provisional ratings for lower rated/junior players c) having a cap on the maximum number of bonus points from a single tournament.
Having said that, I think the biggest distorter of ratings are small pools caused by:
a) Predominantly local play. Clubs that do not have juniors often export rating points on weekends as adults are giving free points to lower quality juniors due to unenergetic play and fear of losing to a junior.
b) Fixed sections. There is easier way to gain rating points than beating a player ceding 100 points in strength and who you know well. This happens a lot in fixed sections. If every tournament is Open U2000 U1600 then there will be an abnormal number of players near the cutoffs.
It is possible for your chess ability to get worse and your rating to go up if the people you play against are getting worse at a faster pace than you are, and it is possible for you to get better at chess and have your rating go down if the people you are playing against are getting better faster than you are. Ratings are always relative, they are never an absolute measure.
