  • The Stock Market (obviously not chess related)

If my memory serves me well, Tom O'Donnell had (positive) comments on :

    The Motley Fool site.

Over the last few years you could have bet on almost any stock and you made money.

    The tide has turned.

    Passive investment strategy.

Some issuers have lowered MERs of their ETFs to 0.05% (e.g., XIC, ZCN). In general, you can almost always find a solid ETF for a given asset class with a MER below 0.30%.

Stocks are almost never up when you need money to buy a car or yacht. I thought everyone knew that. :D

If you're willing to hold a (US in particular) blue-chip stock for a few years, you will make money. At that point, you never lose money taking a profit.

Look at the long-range charts on companies such as 3M and Johnson & Johnson - always going up, and dividend increases every year.

Have a look at the Chess Foundation of Canada for a balanced, long term investment strategy.

Matching your needs rather than getting the best return may be desirable:

              a) need to renew mortgage/retire on fixed income -> long commodities and short REITs
              b) kids going to university -> long MHFI; too many children -> long COST/AAPL
              c) nothing to talk about -> long tech
              d) need arbitrage- long CFC rating of a player who is not improving
