  • The CMA and the CFC support IM Razvan's quest for the GM title!

Razvan Preotu will be playing in Cappelle la Grande February 28 till March 7, 2015 and then he will be off to the Reykjavik Open (Eric Hansen is playing too). The Chess'n Math Association, Canada's National Scholastic Chess Organization and the Chess Federation of Canada, have joined forces to help Razvan in his quest for the Grandmaster title. Each organization has donated $1,000 to help cover the costs of this trip.

I am sure you will all join with us in wishing Razvan the best of luck!

The Chess'n Math Association is a not-for profit organization devoted to bringing the game of chess to youngsters. When you purchase your chess books and equipment from us, you are supporting projects such as this. Please visit our site for purchases: www.strategygames.ca and the Chess'n Math website at: www.chess-math.org

    Sincerely,

    Larry Bevand
    Executive Director

What was the selection process for the CFC contribution?

The CFC contribution was from the youth fund with a likely partial offsetting contribution from the Pugi fund once they make their award. The executive took this action when it was clear that the Pugi process would take too long to allow Razvan to go to these tournaments and possibly get his final GM norm.

        Apparently he's not alone : https://qiyuzhou.wordpress.com/2015/...eykjavik-open/

Qiyu Zhou seems to also have secured some sponsorship from various sources and will participate in both tournaments as well (with the WIM title as a goal).

This is great news and makes me very happy! Its possibly the best decision of the CFC so far this year! CMA and CFC working together to support the cream of our youth! - and of course best of luck and skill to Razvan in his quest for the GM title!

We all wish Qiyu Zhou well!

What I told Richard Bérubé was that I would present the project to my executive. The feeling at the CMA executive meeting was that since we had already donated $1,000 ($500 in cash and $500 in chess books) when Qiyu won the U14 Girls World Championship a few months ago, that we would not participate this time. The CMA is very proud of her achievements and there is no doubt we will be supporting her again in the future.

We all wish her well on this trip!

I too wish Razvan all the best in his quest. I doubt very many players work as hard as he has (and continues to work).

I would have liked for the governors to have been consulted. There was an opportunity at the Governors' meeting 2 weeks ago.
I don't really have a problem with the executive making the final decision but some discussion about the amount or other candidates might have been useful.

                    Great support for Razvan.

At the AuCC we made a tradition to invite titled players for the simul at the end of February. This year we moved it to the end of March to accommodate a busy IM Razvan's schedule. There are not many details known about the simul except the date - March 30. After the Spring Open we will work on that. At least everybody is welcomed to come and kibitz :)

I will give a different point of view.
The CMA is free to do whatever it wants with its money. However, it is criminal for what the CFC has done. With no precedent, no selection process, no advertising that this is a practice, and no idea of the final dollar amount, they have taken money from the CFC accounts and directly given it to a single member. The Pugi fund is the place for this and Razvan should have applied to it earlier or waited for the money to come eventually. 30 years of experience tells me that one more Canadian GM will do very little to improve Canadian chess. Thomas Roussel-Roozmon, Bluvshtein, LeSiege, Charbonneau. They all come and go. All this with the backdrop that there is no Canadian Open planned for all the members. $1000 should have been offered up to help an interested organizer host the Open. That is the sort of thing that a national organization who is not in the business of picking winners or losers should do.
The only good thing I can see is that Vlad has embraced socialism. Taking money from others and redistributing it to who he and the executive feels needs it. Climate change acceptance will be next.

                        Didn't you mean "capitalism"?

Brian's incoherent political drive-by notwithstanding, he has a very good point that shouldn't be lost.

I'd like to hear a serious reply to this.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

No, I meant socialism. Tax, take from, charge those who have money and give it to someone who needs it. I think that is what the pundits on Fox news call it when Obama tries something or when the government tries anything. In our situation, the executive is the government. Was it not France's socialist government that wanted to tax the rich at a rate of 75% to pay for social programs for those without the money to pay for them? Pretty sure that is what is happening here, from my point of view. From the person getting the money, they might think it was capitalism.
