General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Any requirement makes more work for the organiser, and the CFC is so weak that putting pressure on an organiser might lead to the guy walking away. I hear thru the grapevine that some organisers are declining to pay rating fees, and "forgetting" to submit memberships.
"Ban them!" I say. But if they walk away, then that's one more nail in the coffin. It's not like we've got a surplus of organisers.
I don't know what the solution is. Maybe the CFC has to insist organisers are more professional, rather than accepting anyone. And if that leads to less events... like I say, I dunno.
These collections are not simple, but in general I’d say I got 99% of them all... eventually. Trouble is that when these collections do happen, it is not viewed as a general problem and gets taken for granted so you get no credit for doing it and then... get replaced.
Since no credit is given, but I always continued to perform the collections regardless, it just created a bigger and bigger bubble. Consequently when I got replaced, then all of you got the bursting of the bubble. The CFC overall was plus 8 adult members totalling my last 5 years doing the admin. Compare that with minus 430 adult members the other most recent 7 years of my admin absence.
I also recall that I was still trying to clean up this type of old A/R in the final weeks of my admin. One afternoon I sent about 6 or 7 outstanding invoices for past promises to pay. The invoices were all attached with the subject as “Invoice from CFC”, and the body message simply said “attached”. Out of those I got one reply from a former CFC President who just started freaking out and decided tell me he was cancelling his VISA on the spot etc...
Like I said all my messages simply said “attached”, but he decided he wanted to make a game out of it, built me into a straw man and then started tearing me down.

I see your point, organizers have a lot of work to do, but why not post their event and get more advertisement? My guess is that it takes like 15 minutes at the most once you have your information figured out, and as an organizer if you feel that's too much, simply get someone else organizer it who's doing less to do it and your problem is solved. It's really a pain not having a place where you can see all the upcoming tournaments, even if they only required the dates and location of the tournament it would be very helpful. Some tournaments have websites, but not all. To require making a website for your tournament and updating standings all the time would be ridiculous. I realize you said any requirement makes more work for the organizer, but really it's not that hard to put in the dates and location of your tournament. Then again I've never organized a tournament, so I am not really qualified to say if it's a pain or not.

I'm retired from organising, and 99% of my events were for locals only, so I have a narrow point of view. For local events, I used to email the locals, and that's all the advertising I needed.
I used the CFC event-submission form once, found it to be very inflexible. I think I am correct in saying that all the form does is send the info to the office, so it then has to reformatted for the website. Quite a pain for all concerned, I should think.

The CFC offers for free a SwissManager pairing software to chess organizers, what offers for free results publishing on their own website chess-resultscom . Many many tournaments worldwide use this software and this feature. Only several clicks (+ internet connection) and everyone can enjoy results/standings/pairings/stats.

Sounds like you used a paper-version.
Two pairing programs are offered by CFC - SwissManager and SwissSys - both have an option to convert results to a CFC acceptable format.
We were talking about ADVERTIZING events, not reporting results.
I see. Sorry :) http://chess.ca/register-tournament
Yes, it could be improved like reducing a number of mandatory items or paste-copy a text from chesstalks LOL
Bad thing that it is hidden in "Clubs", it must have own category - Tournaments or Events.
Andrew Peredun won the O2000, Corin Schneider the O1600, Max England the O1200 and of course Joshua Terry won the Rookie section, but that was already determined last round.
Congratulations to Joshua (winner of the rookie section) who won it with a perfect 7-0! Joshua, a former student of mine, who had a mini successful career with CMA and had at one time a 1700 rating played in his first "adult" tournament since his starting year and remained seated at the board all the times I saw him in action. Joshua has challenges and literally couldnt sit down in tournament games for his first few years. So this result is a major break thru for him although he still tends to play his all his games with less than 5 minutes used on the clock. I hope to see him win the next higher section next year!
