Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
"It is with great sadness that I inform you that Joe Bellomo passed away last night after a long battle with cancer. Joe has attended the Aurora Chess Club tournaments for sometime and many of you will know him for his reserved demeanour and sharp chess.
I always felt Joe was one of the good guys - always a pleasure to talk to and with an infectious love of chess. Suffice to say, and as many of us know, when you met Joe over the board his tactical ability and passion for winning would always bring an interesting and difficult game.
If you'd like to attend the visitation, it will be held between 2pm and 8pm on Wednesday July 8th at Elgin Mills Cemetery, at 1591 Elgin Mills Rd. East.

Joe was very active at the Scarborough CC too, and played in many Open tournaments in the GTA and beyond. The CFC ID card at http://chess.ca/players?check_rating_number=109793 shows his incredible passion for a chess game.
Joe was a good friend. We often travelled together to chess tournaments such as Guelph & Hamilton, (not to mention John Brown's apartment in Brampton). I enjoyed talking to Joe on those trips as we both had read a lot about the history of chess and the great players like Lasker, Capablanca, & Alekhine. Joe loved chess but chess was not his life. He kept his wins and losses over the board in good perspective. He had a long career as a math instructor at George Brown College. Joe was also was a die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf fan. We would often listen to the Leaf game on the car radio on the way back from a chess tournament. He also liked the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, (CBC). We often had debates about the role of Canada's public broadcaster and the amount of government financial support it required. Joe felt strongly that the CBC played an important and positive role. So I can imagine that Joe was always happy to watch his Leafs on CBC. He will certainly be missed.
I had a very nice lunch break with Joe during the Labour Day Open at the Macedonian church two years ago. We re-connected 13 years after I left Toronto to move to Victoria. He mentioned that he was battling cancer but he was not the least bit afraid or apprehensive. A brave and fine fellow.
At the end of March Joe said the round of chemo was tiring and that he will not play in the SCC Championship. Joe Bellomo was a pleasure to have as an opponent. We met across the board in many occasions at SCC (Scarborough Chess Club). A true sportsman: new how to win and lose.
Ohh yes that sense of humour...they flash through my mind now the many times I saw Pino (Verde) and Joe at their warm-up blitz games at SCC surrounded by a crowd that could play their own warm-up game but got mesmerized by the friendly bickering of these two .
He always gave a good game and if his hand was massaging his nose ..you knew complications were afoot.
Joe, you will be missed.
Joe was always the first smiling face I'd see at any chess tournament we both attended.
Joe and I had some tactical battles in our day.
He was always a friendly man and well respected in the chess community as I'm sure he was with his fellow teachers and students.
You will be surely missed.
