Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Lots of difficulties with the rating update this week.
The memberships and crosstables have been updated, but...
I am having some technical problems with the 2015 Francophonie Rapide Open.
I got the Rapide U1600 in with some urging, but not the Open. Will keep trying.
Also, the TD list and CFC Members database for Swiss Sys are not updated yet.
Will do so when update from FQE site is available. Their site is down temporarily.
Preferably never right Hans? Not that I'm too happy either-3 points away from 2000 isn't exactly what I wanted. I wanted to play in an open, but I'm still stuck in U2000 tournaments. Ah well, next tournament.

I think, it's a wrong idea just to take FIDE ratings for foreign players. CFC has to recognize the gap between CFC-rating and FIDE-rating. In my opinion, the gap is about 150 points.
Right, we don't have rating inflation now. The gap was created 7 years ago because of "not smart" artificial inflation. USCF automatically adds 100 points to any foreign FIDE rating, although their gap is significantly less, likely about 70-80 points. Why CFC couldn't do the same?
Many top Canadian juniors lost a lot of CFC-rating points last week. Indeed, many of them had tough tournament. However, another reason is that they got "CFC-underrated" players from USA. 150 rating points usually means difference of about 0.2 points (of expected performance) for each game. Many juniors played 5-6 games against USA opponents. 0.2 * 5 * 16 = 16. That means many juniors (who played NA Junior in Kitchener) lost additional 16 points because of this "simplified" approach.
There is definitely some truth to what Victor says. However, the average FIDE/CFC difference varies by rating levels and may not be stable enough to use for a mathematically rigorous formula. The USCF/CFC gap presents a bigger challenge because surprisingly many CFC members have outdated USCF ratings or no USCF rating at all, making it hard to do a comparison.
I took the first step 2 years ago to clarify the rules so that outdated CFC ratings would not be used for foreign players. That took care of the greater problem.
I also approached the masters' representative a couple of times to propose aligning the CFC ratings of players over 2200 with their FIDE ratings. There was no interest, probably because most players would have lost CFC rating points and it would have re-ordered the standings of the top players on the CFC rating list.
Of course, what Victor is proposing is different: align the foreign players with their CFC equivalent.
I have been thinking about this problem since Victor brought it to my attention in 2012 without coming up with a reliable solution.
I have a sense that CFC and FIDE ratings will eventually move closer together because there seems to be an increase in Canadian events that are rated under both systems.
I don't view this as a threat to the integrity of our rating system but I'm sure it can be annoying to be on the receiving end of those little 16 point penalties.
