    Re: WYCC 2016 under way

Iceland's 17 players would mean about 50 players per million.
Monaco's 15 players would mean about 275 players per million. :-)

Wow, Hugh, great find, thanks! 15 players from a ~40,000 population - I guess their families are considered Monaco residents for tax purposes but they still play on the French circuit?

Those MNC numbers are pretty hard to beat... unless the Holy See develops a youth chess program. ;-)

Congratulations to Maili-Jade and Aiden Zhou, both of whom continue with perfect scores of 3/3.

Several Canadians achieved remarkable upsets in Rd 3, succeeding against opponents whose FIDE ratings were 200-300 points higher. Those are William Graif, Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux, Luke Pulfer (wins); Adam Dorrance, Sam Song, Hairan Liang, Nicholas Wu, Constance Wang, Maya Kaneshalingam (draws).

In Rd 4 tomorrow, Maili-Jade has Black on Board 4 against Olga Badelka from Belarus. This will be a rematch of their first-board encounter in Round 8 of the 2014 WYCC in Durban, as well as their Round 4 game at the 2013 WYCC in Al-Ain.

Third time is a charm? Vas-y Maili!

                      Re: WYCC 2016 under way

That was actually Adam Dorrance's third draw in a row; a pretty good start considering they were against players rated 2427, 2409, and 2353.

A couple other notable upsets from the first few rounds:

Sugar Ganerdene (2059) vs Adam Gaisinsky (1631) 0-1
                      and
Aidar Kenenbaev (1991) vs Stefano Lee (1556) 0-1

Edit: I'm sure there are more; these are just ones I know about because they are from my assigned players.

Excellent results from very deserving hard-working players. Thanks Andrew for the great work you are doing, and congratulations to your students. Keep up the good fight!

                          Re: WYCC 2016 under way

I found a mistake in my previous math - 1/2 was not counted (simply ignored) in Office.

                          Thus new numbers

                          Round 1 - 21.5
                          Round 2 - 30.5
                          Round 3 - 30.5

                          Total 82.5

Possible points (like 56) and % are time consuming as it is necessary to look for CAN vs CAN games like one in Round 1, and Round 4.

                          Top scorers:

                          Code:

                            Thanks Egis, great table!

Round 4 of the 2015 WYCC means completion of one third of the competition.

Watch live as Aiden Zhou and Maili-Jade Ouellet continue their quests for perfection.

Qiyu Zhou is just one step behind the leading group.

I have made a spreadsheet with all Canadian results so far. http://windsorchess.com/swofo/wycc2015.htm

The players in green are the Windsor contingent.

It would appear that the Windsor contingent has grown by about seven. I am pretty sure that some communities might take issue with your claim of some of their champions as our own.
